Hello all..I know its kinda late for that..but just got net..

I dont know how to do this but here it goes..

Who or What is a " Yacht DR." ? and why do I call myself YD ? well .. Im a YD.

Yacht Dr. = a given name of ONE person in my experience for someone in a locality of boat yards that Knows what there doing.

Others from other yards can goto that one top dog guy that would give advice on there current projects. ( I happend to be given YD status in San Diego ) though I was trained and started in ST. Thomas USVI in 1989 after hurricaine Hugo hit the Islands. where I was instructed and taught in the arts of fiberglass, gel, woodworking and various aspects of boats.

I was 19 then and worked on more damaged boats then I can remember..full 40 ft hull repair and gel sprays in the water..working out of a dingy no less.

I have worked with and under some of the most talented people in the country in the fields of many things..and I will fully consider myself a YD ..not quite a "shipwright" but Im close..

I have vast experience in repair and materials..and as far as I know.. unless told otherwise..knows best..

I Do NOT wish to offend anyone in this group. but sometimes it may happen ( though I am trying to bite my tonsils sometimes )

I hope I am fully welcome..and I only wish to share my experience and knowledge with you all ( I dont know everything..and hope forgiveness and patience is granted in my shortcomings )

TY all.. and I share with you my Current projects that im working on in my shop..( small stuff is not included )

1st set is a new 45' Shannon that was Awl-Gripped in black..there was blistering and had to remove all paint ( 500,000 yacht ) I will be re-priming and finishing with Awl-grip. sanding was done with an 8" soft pad with 24-40-finished off with 80 grit for prime.

As i said..I hope I do not offend anyone here..but..This is my life..and I just want to help as much as possible..

Hey YD - I've been chatting with in another column about re gelcoating vs. painting my boat. After looking at the pics of your"baby" I can see why you recommend gelcoat - Simply beautiful!

Impressive undertakings YD. Great looking results.

Now a question for you. You stated that you used 80 grit for priming. As soon as I get some dry weather outside, I am going to be priming my modified fiberglass doghouse.

I have finished sanding it with 150-180 grit. I am going to use a 2 part Valspar epoxy primer, then topcoat with Interlux Brightsides.

Do you recommend that I go back and block off the doghouse with 80 grit for better primer adhesion?

The current surface is a combination of exposed glass, old gelcoat and old feathered paint.

Once primed, should I use a 250ish grit to block off the primer before top coating? I plan on spraying the Brightsides.

boomyal..

80 grit is the hardest grit recommended for 545 primer ( and I dont want to sand this 45er again heh. )

follow your prep guide on your particular primer.( I only use awl grip primers..) but I think it should be the same..80-120 grit..

I suggest you spot prime your bare glass areas b4 full prime..

As far as your Topcoat..once again..I only use awl-grip or Imron which calls for 320-400 grit prep..( I suggest sanding with 320 along your tape lines..and scotch bright your fine line tape b4 spraying )

Heck..id gel it :)

I'll eventually be doing the full deck and interior of this boat. Like the doghouse, all had previously been over painted. To take the wavy surfaces all down smooth to bare gel coat or underlying resin, I fear it would be way too much work. The wavyness is why I have the mix of surfaces on my doghouse. I was as aggressive as I thought prudent, with heavy grits and large sanding block surfaces and still have areas where the old paint is prevelant.

I also understand that retro gel coating is a ton of work and can be brittle plus the laid up drink holder on the front of my doghouse is all epoxy resin.

SW, I think you better re-read. Those pics are all of AwlGrip.
