Boat, motor and trailer were basically is pretty good share, except for floor.image.jpgimage.jpg

I stripped out the entire interior. Everything will be updated, including seats, floor, upholstery, wiring, add bow mount trolling motor, repaint, etc. my goal is to launch by Christmas 2013.

I hope to paint in the next week, although it is supposed to rain on Saturday. I hope the pictures posted. I got a lot of great design tips from the forum. Thanks!

:welcome: to the Starmada, great looking SS you have there, a twin to mine. Really great boats, you have some work ahead of you if you want to splash her by Christmas.

Thanks Glen. I have never seen my boat in the water. Do you know how many inches it is from the bow to the waterline? I need to know how long of a shaft to get on a bow mount trolling motor. If I could get by with a 45" model it would be great.

Come on G, your holding out on us, post up the rest of the pix you posted in the paint thread, or link that thread here.... You've got quite a few.

BTW: The Admiral looks like she's on board w/ the project, but the 1st mate seems to be a tad less then enthusiastic about it....

Done any color samples yet? A hairdryer on high will quick dry them to get a better idea about the final color.....

I had a Minnkota PD 55 48" shaft on mine and it worked great. It had to be all the way down in order to stay in the water in a chop, so I don't think you would want to go any shorter on the shaft.

The Admiral is very on board with the project. She is the one who convinced me we needed another boat as we have been boatless since we moved off the lake and into a townhome. Our winter home in Arizona is a boating paradise, so here we go. We have owned many over the years and both of us grew up on Lake Minnetonka, hence the end part of my moniker - MTKA is the abbreviation for Lake Minnetonka.

Re: My '72 Starcraft 18' SS 140 Mercruiser Project

I haven't mixed the paint yet as rain is in the forecast for the next couple of days. Boat is in the driveway. It doesn't rain much around here. We have been down here for nearly 2 months this year and yesterday's few drops is the only we have seen. I did prime the consoles and bow piece in the yard yesterday and got them back in the garage before the raindrops came.

I am covering the side panels now. I tried all the suggestions on cleaning up the aluminum bottom channel, even oven cleaner, but they still look rather bland. Not that I want them to shine. Tried Mother's with my Dremel, but still nothing.

I have copied so many pictures from the forum and so many look like my boat I don' want to accidently post the picture of someone else's project. The thumbnails I see on my iPad are so small in the selection screen that it is hard to tell what picture I am selecting.

Re: My '72 Starcraft 18' SS 140 Mercruiser Project

I composed a couple of messages but by the time I hit send they didn't post as I had been logged out or something.

A little history. We have been thinking about getting a boat for our winter home but our car down here is a Chrysler Town and Country, with limited towing capacity. When we got down here this year I drove by a buddy's house to show him my new motor scooter. He showed me the project he had completed, an 18' Starcraft, a 1969 I believe. not an SS, it looked a little broader in the beam. When I lifted the tongue on his rig and mentioned how light it was, he told me how light the entire boat, motor and trailer was. A lightbulb went off in my mind, I could tow this with my T&C!

I found a '72 SS I/O on Craigslist for, $1,200. I drove about 1 1/2 hours to look at it. Having owned many boats over the years (I once restored a barn find 1957 Chris Craft 18' Sportsman from the ground up) I have a pretty good idea about the time and money involved in boat restoring. The boat hull was in very good condition, except for the front deck, which someone had replaced over the years with particle board that you could literally put your foot through. The motor ran with no strange sounds and shifted in and out of gear fine. The tilt went down but not up (I have since replaced the up button on the dash cluster as it appeared to be defective - haven't tested it yet as the battery is in the garage. Came with a nice fish finder and VHF radio. Anyway, we settled on $800. I put new tires on the trailer for the trip home as the existing ones looked suspect (the desert is particularly hard on tire sidewalls if they aren't covered during the summer). It towed like a dream. The picture of the boat and the admiral was taken after I backed the acquisition in the driveway just after I arrived home.

It had a nice Kodiak livewell which I sold on Craigslist as we would never use anyway. It has two nice Todd fishing seats and cushions which will also go on Craigslist, minus the seat mounts and pedestals, which will be going in the rebuild.

Boat is prepped for paint, consoles and bow piece have been seld etch primed. I will paint those in the garage over the next couple of days. I picked up two more cans of primer yesterday for the deck and inner lart of bow so that will soom go on.

I am currently putting the new gray vinyl on the bulkhead panels. I bought some very nice gray marine vinyl from Textile Specialist for $5.80 a square yard, including shipping. It is heavy grade with a nice backing. I bought a Bostitch electric staple gun - best $30 I ever spent! I picked up gray marine carpet at Lowes - the good stuff, for 50 cents a foot. The boat, as yet unnamed, will be a desert trailer queen and unless we hit a Lake Havasu sunami will see little water inside, so everything is not going to be epoxied like I would do for a boat kept in the water, subject to bleeding fish, waterskiers, etc.

The 3/4" particle board doghouse will be replaced with a lighter version, box style with carpet on bottom and gray vinyl top. I think I can get the weight cut by half at least. The one I built for my Chris Craft woodie was 1/4" mahagony plywood, with reinforcements inside, and it held up great.

I will try to take and post some more pictures. The forum has given me so many great ideas due to the pictures and I will be incorporating many of them in my rebuild. I particularly like the fellow who made cut outs for the boards between the console and the forward area to increase the storage accessibility under the bow - great idea!

Long narrative, sorry

I just mixed my paint. Two quarts of Rustoleum Marine White with one quart of Navy Blue. It was just the tine I was looking for.image.jpg

Re: My '72 Starcraft 18' SS 140 Mercruiser Project

Will do. I put the second coat of paint on the consoles and bow seat piece this morning. I am very please how the paint is turning out. It has been raining here fir the last three days and work on the boat outside has ceased for now. Yesterday I was fiddling around with the steering wheel and its cover piece. They were quite dirty with white crusty junk on them. I took some full strength Simple Green and let it soak in and it helped alot, but not quite there yet. I know Back to Black works on cars. Is there any simpler way to get these pieces cherried up?

I am going to continue with the floor rivets this afternoon. I am going to put a backer under the floor in the bow as I might want to install a pedestal there at some point. I did run some speaker wires under the floor to the port side. I don't have a stereo yet and probably won't put one in this year, but as long as the floor was up I thought I may as well run the wires. I will probably run some power wires to the port console as well in case I decide to power something over there. I was hoping to install some new Poly Planar speakers into the side panels as well as long as I was recovering them. I found some new speakers at a garage sale for $2. When I got home I discovered there was only one speaker in the box. Yikes.

I am about ready to make the cutouts for the console boards so there is a pass through to the underseat bow area. When I took off the old vinyl on these boards I noticed how involved the cover was. The different pieces to cover the boards. Wow. I blasted through 1,000 SS staples just on the side panels and the two dash boards. I think it make take that many for the console boards two, considering both side will be covered.

I am still thinking about the doghouse. I have enough let over exterior plywood to make it. I want the design to be simple, probably just a box, so it can easily be covered on the bottom with carpet, and then a separate top board with a slight cushion covered with vinyl. I will probably put welting around it like they sell at Veada. Imhave used it before and I like the fact that the staples are hidden.

I will post some more pictures when I have something to interest to show.

I did the cutouts for the console boards today, among other little things. Covering them with vinyl considering both side show will be a challenge.

I got one of the console panels covered today. Would have done the other but the admiral wanted to see a move. I taped the deck and interior as well. I hope to self etch the bare aluminum and put the first coat of paint on the deck and bow area. The weather is supposed to be pretty good tomorrow.image.jpg

Does anyone have a suggestion to clean the cloudiness from my George Jetson stern light?

I think the crystal quality glass globe changes to frosted over time, not sure it's ever going to be much better.

Often they also 'fade' to purple:

As a Jetson user - Leave it alone. The glass is lead crystal, which gets a Purple Haze from UV. Mine has a frosty look inside and it doesn't come off. I think the frost is for light refraction purposes. Also, even with the Purple Haze, it glows white and bright when it's on.

Here, let Jimi tell you about the technicalities.

EDIT - I didn't mean to sound harsh about leaving it alone. The Jetsons have become a rarity and the glass is fragile.

Hah ha. One of my college roommate's favorite songs... The only thing I tried was toothpaste and it did nothing. I will leave it as is then and consider it as in Bristol condition as is. I just didn't want to be the only Starcraft out there with a cloudy globe.

Looks like good progress Gammtka.

For the trolling motor, there is a guy here on Vegas craigslist selling a 74# MK Genesis bow mount (supposedly new, never touched water) for $400. I'm not sure of the shaft length, but I'd double and triple check it as to me it looks short, but it has a very fat shaft which is deceiving in the pictures.

Oh yeah, if you need stainless nuts & bolts, go to A&B Supply or the Ace Hardware on the south side of Havasu.
