Started working on the transom. Had to clean out the boat first since it was driving me nuts. Cleaner Deck:

The nuts and bolts on the transom are pretty tight and rusty. I'm going to drop some oil on them over night before I go out out of town tomorrow. The wood in the transom is wasted. I drilled out the rivets on the end caps. That went ok. I started out with a bit that was too small but up it in size till it worked.

The splash-well appears to be riveted onto the sides of the boat. These rivets or whatever they are look different from the ones I drilled out of the endcaps. Here's a couple of pics of what I'm talking about.

What would be the best way to disconnect this splash-well from the sides? And what will I use to reconnect?

What kind of tool would cut these rusty nuts off the bolts? Some are stripped pretty bad. Needs to be a small or handy tool to fit in snug areas. Sawzall to big.

Thanks

Dremel tool with a cutoff wheel works well for cutting off or grinding down bolts in a tight area.

Yup, dremel has saved me plenty of times. Get the cheap cut off discs and a few of the fiber reinforced ones where you may not be able to cut with a steady hand.

Those other rivets, you can either try to drill them out or sheer them off with a sharp chisel. Drilling just requires you to just get the drill started in the center...easy enough to do with a punch or a dremel with a grinding stone.

OK- I drilled out the rivets on the sides. No sweat.

Had some "experience :) " show up and they helped me out.

:D :D

Getting those rusty nuts off was a two person job anyway. We got them off and the transom out.

Thanks for everyone's help so far. Now it's time to make a template.

Bit of advice for you Arnie. Look on the right rear corner of the boat, on the outside...looking for string of numbers/letters. That's the closest you'll find in the way of a Texas Maid Hull ID or serial number. When you go to license the boat with TPWD, they'll want those numbers or a photo of any plates that are on the boat...like the square plate shown in your Making Progress photo. Nice work, you're moving right along. Keep the pix coming.

Now that you mention it, when I was grinding a bolt off the back I was at an angle and thought I saw a faint outline of some numbers or something.

No worried, I have the title for it. I need to get a title on the trailer though. It looks home made.

Thanks for the advice.

The trailer shouldn't be much of an issue, you can just simply tell them it's home made and they'll slap that tag on it. We have lifetime trailer licenses up here in MN now, which took a big chunk out of the irritation of the works. No need to transfer titles on the trailer. Just keep a bill of sale handy if there is ever a question.

Re: My 1964 Texas Maid Restoration Thread - Transom

OK

Original transom was a piece of 1 1/4" plywood. It is not recoverable for a template. I'm going to make a template from cardboard and transfer it over to the plywood. I have a couple of questions.

1. After I cut my EXTERIOR GRADE plywood I should seal it good with epoxy right?
2. I should sand and then spray zinc chromate on the inside of the transom?
3. Install all new stainless hardware

Am I missing anything?

Thanks

Sounds like a plan, you're on the right track. Be sure and cross-grain the wood grain on your plywood pieces for the transom, makes it stronger. I primed and painted my new transom with Kilz latex primer and a premium latex exterior house paint, but I live in a real dry climate so moisture is not a problem here. Man that's gonna be a sweet boat.

Re: My 1964 Texas Maid Restoration Thread - Transom

Hi guys-

Coaching T-Ball and building lamb pens has gotten me sidetracked on my restoration project. However, I have the transom out and the template done. I'm heading to town tomorrow to round up my plywood and glues to build my transom.

You might remember my Texas Maid has been a budget boat. I traded some archery equipment for it. Well, I continued the tradition today by locating a 1976 Johnson 55HP boat motor and controls + boat and trailer--- :) for the hefty some of a 30 pack of beer.

The PO said the motor runs but needs carb work. A quick drain of the lower unit showed some water in it, not much but some. It's been sitting in a barn and the guy wanted it gone. Heck, it came with a nice 19 gallon plastic fuel tank.

Well, I have a bead on an 85hp Evinrude but it's been kinda wishy washy. I may just run with this. It's dusty but pretty clean.

More to come..... Thanks for looking.

Man, you have a nose for deals/trades. Nice work. Check out the Awakening A Sleeping Outboard thread to see what needs to be done to that Johnson. Course if you get the E-rude, too, you could have twins on the transom.

Yes, just ran out and checked. It's the fish and ski.

What do you know about these?

Neat little boat. Before I tear it apart I will clean it up to see what it needs. Everything is there , it looks like the transom has been patched.

I just need the motor. Will be checking motor compression in the next day or so.

I know I just bought one with all the hardware etc. removed that I need to at a minimum rip the floor out of... don't know about stringers yet, and I may need to replace the transom - although the one on yours looks a lot worse than mine.

If you end up parting it out, there are several bits I might be interested in - if yours even has them. Yours looks about as hacked as mine.

Re: My 1964 Texas Maid Restoration Thread - Transom

Let me know. You are welcome to everything except the motor and controls. PM me your email addy and I'll send you some more and better pics.

On another note, I just checked compression. Both cylinders came in at around 145. The carbs, internals, everything looks really clean.

Does anyone have any quick tips on cleaning up and repainting the motor? What type of paint, etc?

I'll do a search in the meantime.

Will cut the transom tomorrow.

Thanks
