Hey, I have to give him thanks for serving, but the things he is saying are just unamerican and destructive to our effort and our troops. He is bordering on being a trator to out country.

Re: Murtha is just wrong!

I would support Murtha's right to make any comment he likes IN CLOSED SESSION. When those types of comments are made publicly, the only result is the lowering of troop morale and encouragement to the enemy. <br /><br />I deeply respect his service to the country, but I can't help but wonder if the horrors of combat have clouded his judgement.

Very good observation as usual Alden. I personally believe that some of those who have served, and some of those who have lost a family member etc., often cannot make decisions on these matters with the clarity that they require . . . My .02

QC, <br /><br />I think this thread and all like it bring out two schools of thought. One believes we are at war and the other does not.<br /><br />You are one of the iboaters who posts clearly thought out positions without stooping to the recess style antics (except that one time ;) ) . Keep posting. :)

I think he's wrong too, but I don't think his comments ought to be restricted to closed session either. The public should hear everyhting that elected leaders have to say. That way the public can decide whether there they get to stay elected or not.

I'm guessing you have never been in the military? Those are the Americans who get SHOT AT when people make stupid remarks and embolden the enemy.

From a military family. I was born blind in one eye so I couldn't enlist. In this conflict, I doubt very seriously that Murtha is going to be able to embolden the enemy more than they already are. Murtha will bury himself over this and I am not in favor of taking his shovel away.

I still love you NMplayer. I just don't want to bury a few other Marines merely to help Murtha out of Congress.

Sometimes i really have to wonder if some of you fellers are really like wet bread in a basket or you're just pretending to be.<br /><br />With all of the ramblings in Washington, a lot gets to be blocked out of view by the smokescreens of partisan politics.<br /><br />There is absolutely no way in hell that the USA will be out of IRAQ before the year 2015, regardless of which party controls the Various branches of govt'. even then we will still have to retain some form of military presence in Iraq, most likely well into the latter part of this century.<br /><br />Anything else would be suicide for the USA, General Powell said it most appropriately " If we break it we will have to own it".

One of the problems as I see it is the people in charge have access to information that isn't nor should be made public. Call me stupid but I truely believe there were WMD in Iraq and were moved at the last minute. If Bush knew there weren't any but he still gave that as a reason for invasion he should have had some ready to plant there to "discover" for all the world to see. Having said that I get sick of these "polls" trying to gin up public opinion that we should have never gone there. We are there and our troops deserve every support we can give them. I was in the Navy 68-72 watching the Viet Nam protesters on TV. I was not in combat but was still demoralized by the fact our peers were calling us names and all of that. We need to get military men running the war not elected idiots.

Re: Murtha is just wrong!

Have you even evaluated what Murtha is proposing?<br /><br />First, he is not advocating an "immediate pullout" but rather a reasoned reduction to the periphery. Let the Iraqis defend their own country, instead of bickering and posturing over political power while we defend their country.<br /><br />If they want their freedom, they will reach political compromises and create their own country. We should remain poised if and when the real terrorists (Al Qaida and the like) come in and then we will destroy them.<br /><br />The only way an insurgency can succeed is with the will of the people, and the Iraqis don't want us there, and we should not be taking sides in a civil war.<br /><br />Have we not learned anything in the past 200 years? Our military is extremely effective, but only when it has a clear mission, clear goals, and a definition of what constitutes "victory"<br /><br />Currently we have none of those things.

Rush covered this today on radio 30-45 minutes before you posted using similar words. That's why I made the "rush" to judgment.
