Murray 14 Horse Briggs Riding Mower

Well my wife started it up to cut for the first time and it stalled and smoked.When I checked the oil level was way high.I drained and it had GAS in it.Filled and drained after a little running (1 minute) twice.Seems to be okay now but I am leaving for work.It is a 1999 model.Never had this happen with any mower before.<br /><br />Thanks in advance for your response.I will be back at 4AM CDST.

Your wife may have flooded it real good or needle valve in carb gummed up from the sit doesn't shut off fuel

Started for the first time...after an extended storage I would guess. Well you had a fuel leak like dolluper suggested and it leaked by the rings.<br /><br />No real problem just put in new oil and keep an eye on it. I have seen that happen hundreds of times with those small portable generators that have the tank mounted above the carb and gravity usually wins.

If it has a fuel shut off valve, use it. If it doesn't, install one.

Thanks for the help guys.The fuel shut-off will be installed by days end or 2PM which is "Leave for work time."<br /><br />neumanns--I work a long 2nd shift 'til 3AM so by the time I get home,raid the fridge and log on it is 4AM.It is the ONLY quiet time I get.<br /><br />>>>>>>>HAPPY BOATING<<<<<<<

BTW, the front wheel bearings on that tractor are probably sleeve bearings. That is common with Murry. I would suggest you keep them well greased. And when you have nothing better to do, pick up a set of wheel barrow roller bearings from the hardware store and drive out the sleeve bearing and install the roller bearings. Keep them well greased. For a few bucks more the same roller bearing is available as a sealed unit that never needs lube. A nice upgrade that keeps the front end from getting wobbly as the sleeve bearing wears out. It also tends to wear a flat spot on the bottom of the axle, making even new sleeve bearings fit loose.<br /><br />I have done this on the last two tractors I have owned and never had a problem with sloppy steering due to worn bearings.<br /><br />Why any manufacturer puts sleeve bearings in a tractor is beyond me. (this is one of my pet peeves, can you tell?)

Good chance if it had that much fuel in the oil, it may have damaged the cylinder walls...you'll know when you start running it again...it'll smoke quite well.
