Hey guys, Ive got a 1997 Wellcraft 175SS with a Mercruiser 4.3L 262. Im trying to get my boat running but it really doesnt want to. I thought it was a fuel problem because i can turn the engine and it wont start only if i spray some ether in the carb. Still it will only run for a few seconds on the ether and then die. I took the fuel pump completely out and bench tested it with a 12V battery and it would run so i thought it wasnt the problem. Then took the fuel line off the fuel filter head and nothing was coming out. So i put everything back together and put 5 gallons gas in the tank. The fuel gauge now read 1/4 tank. Tried starting. Nothing. Pulled the fuel fitting off from the carb that ran to the pump and crankd for a good 20-30 seconds and nothing. Thing wont pump fuel, Im thinking maybe a bad fuel pump or maybe theres a bad return valve in the tank or something im not sure. Unless i reinstalled the pump wrong and i'm supposed to prime it or something???Anyhow i ccant get this dang thing to pump fuel.

Re: Murcruiser 4.3L 262 Fuel Problems

There is an oil pressure switch that has a habit of corroding. Down on the port side of the engine, above the oil filter (if you don't have a remote filter)... You'll see 2 wires on it, one purple the other purple/yellow... TEMPORARILY join them together, that will have the fuel pump running whenever the key is ON... If the fuel pump now works... that switch (and associated wiring) is the problem... This is a TEMPORARY fix for testing purposes ONLY... Fix it properly, please....
