Re: Mr Dealer, Can I get my check back?

So this guy buys a boat without researching or presumably test driving it? That speaks volumes about the knowledge level of the guy. Then we have the question about will it be powerful enough to pull up a slalom skier? Who's the skier?
I would have thought anyone who was into skiiing would have some knowledge AND personal experience of how a boat should handle with a skier.
I may be missing something here, but it sounds like this guy woke up one morning and said "hey let's go out buy a ski baot and I'll take up skiing. My only skill is writing a check". That's what it sound s like to me.
As they say...A fool and his money are soon parted.

So what is wrong with that? Do we have to beet up people who jump in to boating? Good for him, he decided to take action and do something that he has wanted to do. Its better than being the guy on the couch wanting to live life but never taking action on it. We all make mistakes, its still up in the air if he made a mistake or not. I don't think we should be bashing people who jump in to boating. Just kindly encourage them to take a boaters safety course and be polite at the docks.

Man you guys get off topic fast. OP asked if a 190HP 4.3L V6 would be enough power for his friends Rinker. More specifically for slalom sking not about build quality vs weight....

The ride quality discussion is absolutely on topic, dan. He included weight as his main concern, and there is an upside to weight. I am not sure where he posted 190. The test was a 200, and this year it is a 220. In regards to skiing performance, if he was a serious skier he would not have bought a stern drive bowrider. Personally I think you gotta start somewhere. Very few of us own our last boat ;)

Edit: I agree, anemic performance, but it is not suicide time. If propped for hole shot then yes cruise efficiency may be slightly compromised, but less than 5% I am guessing. We're talking about maybe $3/day on the high side :)

I would be looking to exchange that boat for the same model with the V8 in it.

The Rinker 196BR with I/O only offers one engine. The 4.3L V6. So the owner would be looking for the rest of his life for a V8 equipped 2012/13 196BR.
He already bought it, so now needs to make the best of what he has, performance will be adequate, ride will be very good for a boat that size.

You apparently need a ride in a light 1800 lb boat in a good chop..that Rinker will would feel like a yacht in comparison...:D
Compared to what I'm used to, I wouldn't want to ride in the Rinker let alone the 1800 lb. boat.

Hmm you can get the 5.0L MPI by MerCruise or Volvo in a 2014. According to the build your boat section on Rinker's site anyway. I for some reason thought he bought the boat new and might have the option to return it. Being that it's used you got to ask why the previous owner dumped it so fast. If it's new you got to ask way it set around on the lot for so long and didn't sale.

No you don't. You need to go run her, and have a good time doing it.

I agree he needs to run it to be sure how it's going to perform, but having a boat that to under-powered to do what you paid good money for is not a lot of fun and going to lead to serious buyers remorse.

Re: Mr Dealer, Can I get my check back?

Wow, Didn't mean to get some of ya so excited. Just having some fun looking for advice.

It's just a runabout. Nothing special. I was hoping to find someone who had a 19ft +- with a 4.3 that was heavier than a bayliner. For those that just focus on one word, I said we have an old 23 foot we slalom and do all our activities on. It is running on 7.25 cylinders with a 5.7. No longer much of a performer anymore but it gets the job done.

I am going to buy a SS prop so I was considering the 4 blade for some more performance to get up on plane and pulling something. Thanks for the advice to wait till I get on the water. We are just too excited and too much free time on my hands. Ive been looking at new props way too soon.

Not concerned about top speed, it's a runabout. Go out and have some fun. Funny how people are so into top speed from a entry level boat. In fact people spend many more times above for a boat that will not go as fast as a runabout and is about the same size.

I like the guys comment about waking up one morning with a check in my hand! haha! Actually he's spot on, with the addition I've been tired of looking years and years at 7 or 8 year old used boats on craigslist for the same price as a new boat. Found a new boat that is 2/3 the price that the dealer across town is selling the same model just 1 year newer; tough choice.

Too bad it sounds like no one has a Rinker 196 and upgraded to the 4 blade SS and loves it?

Cheers! Boat safe! Merry Christmas!

Re: Mr Dealer, Can I get my check back?

Interesting the Boat test shows 3150 dry weight but Rinker shows 3400lbs yet the outboard identical version is 2500lbs...so a 900lb difference due to the weight of the engine. What I'm seeing on that Rinker though is that it is 19'6" so close to 20 feet but they seem to not include an extended swim platform in the LOA. In other words lots of brands claim a longer LOA but they are cheating and including the swim platform. My 18 footer is 2950 dry with that same 4.3 liter yet the optional engines went up to the 270hp V8. The 4.3 is an amazingly capable engine but where I notice that I really needed the bigger engine is when You put extra people in the boat. If indeed the Rinker is 3400lbs then you will be disappointed with the performance IMO. Regardless then, that is a heavy boat and IMO the heavier the better.

Re: Mr Dealer, Can I get my check back?

dan02gt , my apologies, I stand corrected. When I did the "build a boat" I neglected to check into ALL options. And yes, in 2014 you can get the new Volvo 225HP Cat V-8. But it is not really much more HP over the V6 (5 hp) More torque for sure, but not sure if it would make a huge difference. I was looking for the 5.0L V8 option, which they do not offer now, but they did in 2012 . The 5.0L V8 @260HP would be nice in that boat.
