This motor is causing me to pull what hair i have left out. This is what i've done so far, New coils, new condensers, new points, new plugs, new in line fuel filter, fresh lower unit lube. Cleaned the carb. new float. Ive adjusted the points as to what the manual says. The manual on this motor is pretty generic to me. I think im possibly 180 degrees out. Ive noticed it seems to have a lean sneeze when it gets down to idle then it dies. Then it's harder than heck to get it to start again. I've ordered new plug wires for it as well, should be in by next weekend. Ive upped a coulpe of videos of it running. any help i would appreciate.

Re: Mq-13m 9.5

Check compression. Check spark.

If that's all good, J6C plugs gapped to .030", you should go much faster at WOT, and shouldn't sneeze if low speed jet is adjusted correctly (around 1.5 turns out from seated). Go through carb again. Clean all passages and confirm w/compressed air. If you didn't remove the welch plug over the inlet ports in the carb throat, do it and clean that chamber and blow out holes. Ensure proper float adjustment.
I'm assuming pumping the primer bulb doesn't help.
Good luck!

Ahoy, Fador.

What manual are you using? Your "generic" comment suggests that it might not be the OEM Service Manual.

What prompted you to do the massive parts replacement and overhaul? Was it broke? What were the original symptoms?

I believe that parts replacement/overhaul is the most used, most expensive and least effective troubleshooting method know to man. One of the reasons I believe that is that the opportunities for error that introduce new troubles are multiplied by fixing, mainly, stuff that ain't broke.

As to where you are now, it sounds like a careful Link 'n' Synch, by the OEM Manual, should solve your trouble. Be sure that idle mixture and speed are adjusted with the foot in water and in gear. That is probably an oversimplification, but give it a try and let us know what happens (and what you started with).

Good luck. :)

Re: Mq-13m 9.5

Compression is 75 psi on top and 72 psi on bottom hole. Im using J8C plugs gapped at 30. As far as carb i didnt remove the welch plug. I blew carb cleaner threw all passages and all were clear. The float was installed upside down so i removed it and installed it correctly. The reason for replacing all the parts was due to it having a broke plug wire. so while i had it down i just replaced everything. I ended up with the top plug wire being to short so i ordered new wires for it. When i said generic manual. it was from the ebscohost site. im sure it isnt generic but i couldnt understand it. so I found (Leeroy's Ramblings) and i was way off far as setting the points. Link 'n' Sink? im confussed as to what that means? any help i would appreciate.

Re: Mq-13m 9.5

Use J6C or J4C plugs, Fador, gapped at .030".

Link 'n' Synch adjusts the throttle and ignition advance linkages and synchronizes them for optimum performance. There is no generic version, each model has its own procedure. I trust only OMC's version. Sounds like you are using a pirated, aftermarket or bogus Manual.

Remove the Welch plug. There is a replacement in your kit. Only rarely does air and solvent alone thoroughly clear those orifices that you access with the plug out. A partially restricted idle orifice would produce exactly the symptoms you describe.

As for all the time and bux you have invested, I remind you of the wrench's creed: "If it ain't broke, don't fix it."

Good luck, and let us know. You are almost there. :)

Re: Mq-13m 9.5

I messed up and bought this motor from a guy who said he used it a week before i bought it. Well long story short gas was pouring out of it everywhere and hardly would run. So that when i decided to start replacing parts as to the way it was running. this is the site im talking about.
Code:
http://search.ebscohost.com/
lots of info there for alot of different things. I actually found it here on this site. I'll see what i can do with linkages and synchronizes. I also noticed that i have a leaky gasket on the front of the motor as well see fuel comming out of it. Crankcase gasket. I hope i get it running right.
