Motor won't turn off with ignition

I have a 1980 Johnson 35 hp outboard that will not turn off with the ignition switch. One "m" wire is going to ground and he other wire (black/yellow) is not connected to anything in the engine compartment. I believe that wire should be going into the 3-wire connector for the ignition coils but I am a little concerned about splicing that into the black/yellow wire on the other side of the connector that goes into the power pack. I guess I'm looking for some reassurance as I do not want to short or ground out anything that should not be grounded. Thanks

Try releasing the pin that the wire came loose from in the connector. A paper clip slid in on front side along pin will release it. You can replace the pin or try soldering the wire to existing pin.

The blk/yel wire needs to be grounded to kill ignition and should be connected to the raised M terminal on switch. Best using connector at the motor end of harness.

Re: Motor won't turn off with ignition

The black/yellow wire is connected to the raised "m". The problem is on the engine side. The black/yellow wire is not connected to anything. According to what I can find, that wire should be connected to the 3-wire connector coming from the ignition coils. However, there are only the two coil wires going into the connector. There is not an extra pin or anything else in the connector. Somebody clearly has done some rewiring on this motor. I just want to make sure that the black/yellow wire coming from the raised "m" on the ignition goes into the connector coming from the coils and going into the power pack. Thanks

Since there was no pin in the 3-pin connector for the black/yellow wire coming from the ignition switch harness, I spliced the black/yellow wire into the black/yellow wire going to the power pack and it now works great. Thanks for the help.

You got it right. That wire must be able to be grounded to kill ignition.
