motor won't start

I am experiencing a similar problem. It cranks with no start and as soon as you let off the key it with backfire or sometimes start. All of a sudden the starter wouldn't engage anymore. Replaced starter and solenoid now nothing. I can't hear the fuel pump pressurizing the injectors either? 350 Mercruiser in an old lobster boat. Help there are lots of lobsters out there and I'm stuck on the mooring. I think I connected the solenoid wires to the wrong post and I reversed it back but would that blow a relay or fuse?

from your post we gather that it is a 350 / 5.7 liter Mercruiser and it has injectors.

is this a TBI motor or a MPI motor?
