Motor won't start

With idle lever in 1/2 raised position, ignition key pushed for choke, starter turns motor but no start.
If I follow the same sequence AND push the engine shut off switch, the motor runs for about 2 seconds and then shuts off.
The Clymer manual shows the kill switch as normally open with C going to ground and A going to M on the key switch. Pushing the kill switch should take M to ground and stop the motor.
My kill switch seems to be working backwards, any thoughts?
1988 Evinrude 70hp w/ VRO

Newell

Re: Motor won't start

The klll switch has a cap on the teather, that goes over the switch button, holding it down, until the cap is pulled off, killing the engine. Boat U.S. design is like that,as I have it on my Bliner.
Re: Motor won't start

Just to add a comment, once, I did not have the laniard clip, so I braced a wood stick against the switch, it still didnt work! The switch must be pushed in ALL of the way.

One more thing newell, back off on the carb cleaner, the reason WD-40 was suggested is that it will not wash all of the oil from your engine.

Also, if you reply to your previous thread next time, then everyone will know just what the heck we are talking about! LOL Good Luck

12footer, please identify CAP and teather. Are you saying that the kill switch must be pulled OUT to kill the engine?

Evin, what is a laniard clip? My kill switch is just aft of the shift lever and there is a covered conector port just below the ignition switch. Are we talking the same motor?
Idid not apply carb cleaner.
Did not post to original thread as I viewed this to be a different subject, sorry if I misled anyone.

Newell

Re: Motor won't start

No missles here,Newell. All is hunky-dory.
You may have a different type of switch.
If the switch has a push-button,it is the one I described. If not, don't fret. They are basicly the same in function. They work by grounding the ignition out, just like the ignition switch does in the "OFF" position.
They close the circuit to ground. If this switch is shorted,or the lanyard/teather device are not plugged-into it, it will not allow the engine to start.
A lanyard and tether are one in the same thing. It's a strap that goes around your wrist, with a length of line. On the other end of this line, there should be a plastic cap, that fits OVER the kill switch. It snaps onto the kill switch like a bottle cap.
In te event of going overboard, the tether attached to your wrist will pull this cap OFF the kill switch. Engine stalls, you can swim over and get back in it.

Re: Motor won't start

12Footer,you confirmed my theory of the "kill" switch function(it is normally open. When depressed it takes M of the ignition switch to ground). The fact that my motor will not fire unless the kill switch is depressed, tells me it is defective. I plan to disconnect it!Seems to me that the key switch will do the same thing anyway (don't plan on going overboard).
Will send via private Email some photos of the controls.
Thanks,

Newell

Ok, Newell. I disconnected mine too, but I had my reasons. My bvrother was injured badly by a deactivated ignition at WOT.
I realy should hook it back up, but then,my brother will never go fishing in my oat again...Can't have that, now, can we?
Feel free to Email me any time.
I just got back from te site, and got the pics. It appears to be just a pushbutton kill switch. No tether there. But yes, they do werk the same. Thumb instead of cap .

12, I disconnected the kill switch this AM.
Had to open the store so did not try yet, maybe tonight.
Sorry to hear about your brother, did he hit something in the water?
Am using the Clymer manual but it leaves something to desire as to wiring diagrams.

Newell

12/Evin,
Limited Success!!
I removed the kill switch and adjusted the neutral switch and she RUNS! Not well, but more than I had.Probably needs some tweaking of idle adjustment things.
Any thoughts?

Newell
