Motor won't go up

I put a new alternator belt on tonight and when I went to put the motor up the motor up button sound like the motor was going dead and the trailer button did the same thing. They both would work for just a second or two but then quit. Sounds like a motor when going dead. I have a 4.3 merc on a 1992 larson. Is there a way to test the hydraulic motor to see if it needs replaced?

I went and tried it again so I could give a better description. The motor Up button doesn't work or get any kind of sound when I use it. The Trailer Up button works but sounds like a motor going dead however once it doesn't go up anymore and I hit the Trailer up button again it clicks. Any ideas?

Is the battery dead? Charge it then tell us what happens.

The motor doesn't go up and down, the drive does.

Assuming you mean the drive, have a look at this.

Re: Motor won't go up

So I had the charger on for a little over an hour. Prior to putting on the charger on the battery was reading 13 and after an hour a little over 13 so I don't think it was a dead battery. I checked the fuses and they are not blown. All of the connectors are good and didn't see any corrosion on them. I wasn't sure how to check the "Thermal circuit breaker in pump motor open" from Don S list.

When I push the Up on the throttle I don't get a click or any motor sound but I still get a click when I push the Down button on the throttle and when I push the Trailer button. When I push the Trailer button the motor runs but is very very weak sounding and doesn't have enough power to lift the drive. When I touch the motor area it seems very hot. I'm thinking the motor is going dead. Is there a way to test the motor.

Hook the motor directly to the battery. If it runs slow or doesn't run at all, you need a pump motor at least.

You can also jump across the two main studs of the up solenoid and down solenoid. If that makes it go up and down it is the solenoids. With 300 hours on my 1999 I have replaced the down one twice and the up one once. This year both failed at once after winter storage.

I hooked the red power from the motor directly to the battery and none of the up, down, or trailer do anything. No sound of the motor and no click. Per Don S that would be the motor but I waned to make sure when hooking the motor directly to the battery that only the red power wire needed ran directly And not anything else.

Ayuh,... There's gotta be a Ground involved there somewhere,...

There is no RED wire coming from the trim pump motor. There is a black wire (ground) green/white wire (down) and a blue/white wire (up).

Take the wires from the trim pump motor off the solenoids and bracket, then touch the black wire to the negative battery terminal and either the green white or the blue white to the positive terminal of the battery.

Does the motor run or not ???????

I hooked the ground to the negative and then the blue white to the positive and all it did was spark??

I may have spoken too soon. First take the motor off the pump and try it again. If it doesn't run replace the motor. if the motor runs then the pump is locked up and you need the pump.

Re: Motor won't go up

Alright I took the motor off and hooked it directly to the battery and the motor runs good. It's not slow or anything and revs up real good. And yes the pump is locked up I wasn't able to turn it at all. So I guess I need a new pump. Thanks Don S for your help and patience. I really appreciate it.

One other question was I checked the Solenoid terminals on your (Don S) list and they read as follows Terminal 5 - 5.3, Terminal 4 -9.7, Terminal 2 - 9.4, Terminal 3 - 9.3. Is terminal 5 suppose to read 5.3 or should it read as the other ones do. I think the solenoids are ok but was curious about the lower voltage on terminal 5.

Sorry, have no idea what those numbers go to. Do you Have a link to that file?

They may not sell just the pump. May have to buy the motor and pump as an assembley.

Re: Motor won't go up

Sorry Don S I should have been a little clearer on what I was referring to. I was referring to your post from June 26th, 2013, 08:11 PM. The diagram that you attached lists the terminals I was referring to and the numbers I posted were the volts I got at each. I didn't get 12 volts at any of the terminals which I think is what they are suppose to read. Should I replace the Down solenoid as it is only reading 5.3 volts. I think they are like $20 and may be worth just replacing while I have everything apart.

Re: Motor won't go up

Just wanted to give a final update. I replaced the trimp pump which had to be bought together with the motor but at least I didn't have to buy the entire assembly and now I have an extra motor which is always good. I installed the new motor and pump this past weekend and everything is back up and running. Thanks to all especially for Don S walking me through the testing.
