I have a 93 Weeres 20 Suntanner. It came with a 40 hp mercury "classic" 4 cylinder. That one went down on me Saturday (no compression on #1 & #3) Checked on alot of options and decided on a 50 hp Evinrude 2 cylinder. this will be my first Evinrude. I mostly just cruise and pull the kids on a tube so should I expect any difference from the merc or not really. I dropped the boat off today and it is supposed to be ready to go by Friday. I guess I am just anxious to see what it is going to do.

Re: motor swap on my toon

my guess is the evinrude 50 will perform quite a bit better then a tired classic 40.. i have heard the classic 50 only really puts out 45 hp. not sure on the 40.. my friend had a evirude 40 on his similar pontoon, and i think it does better then my tired old mercury 2 stroke 50 4 cylinder.. if the rude is in good shape, should be a good upgrade.. night and day, maybe not, but better i bet

good luck, let us know how it goes..

Re: motor swap on my toon

Ok gang. Took the boat out today. I am very pleased with the engine, it ran flawlessly.

Here are some of my results: 93 20' weeres pontoon with dressing room, '73 50 hp evinrude "lark" propeller is factory aluminum 3 blade 13.75 X 15.

Myself 210 lb 14 yo son 130 lb on board wot 5500 top speed by gps 19 mph

The wife and other son came out after we felt like everything was a go. Combined weight 200 lb wot 5200 gps battery died so no more speed results

Pulled the boys on a kneeboard wot 5200 kind of slow to get going, not bogging or sluggish just took a while to reach top speed.

Let the 14 yo son make a pass by himself right before loading up and he said he got 5800 wot.

The engine range is 5000-6000 per the label on the mounting bracket. I am thinking once we load down with coolers etc. dropping pitch to 13 may put me where I need to be.

My question is should I consider dropping diameter ? Stainless ? 4 blade ?

Turing point says use a 12.25 diameter 15 for speed 13 for water sports.

I dont have power trim but we did move it around manually to get the best ride and turning.

Also the motor is running in the water at what I feel to be a good depth from what i have read.

Any thoughts or suggestions ?

One last thought if anyone knows the gear ratio it would help me with my calculating. model 50373r it has a large foot like a bigfoot looks like.
