I don't know how to imbed images in this post so please bear with the thumbnails.

My 1979 Johnson 140hp is siezed so I would like to swap it out and install a 1972 Johnson 100hp Problem is 140hp has the rod-through-tilt-tube setup at the stern and the 100hp has another system with which I am not familiar. There is no tilt tube but only a 5/8 inch bolt. There is a bracket on the transom which appears to have held the aft end of the steering cable housing. That is all I have for steering with this motor.

How do I connect the steering cable from the 140 to the 100. My first preference is to transplant the tilt/swivel bracket from the 140 to the 100 but I suspect the mounts would not line up. My second preference is to procure the missing parts and some how attach them to the cable. My third preference is to build and mount a tube external to the tilt bracket for the steering rod to slide through.

Any ideas?:D

this mount to the end of the cable, and connects where the ball was.

or simpler and cheaper is to use the "ezy-guide universal transom mount" , and reverse the tube, easily done.

Re: motor swap need help on steering conversion

:eek:The price of those parts is more than I paid for the boat and motor combined and the ezy-glide is for port side cable entry only:confused:.

I guess that leaves me with option #3. I will :confused:have to fabricate something myself. Has anyone tried this before?;)

Re: motor swap need help on steering conversion

I recently fabricated the entire setup, because I wasn't going to spend as much on three little pieces of hardware than I did on the entire boat. I have a '59 Evinrude Lark 35hp that does not have a tilt tube, and the PO of the boat I bought (a '59 Texas Maid Osprey) had converted the cable and pulley steering to rack steering to run a 2003 Yamaha.

The clevis kit that attaches the steering cable to the motor bracket is pretty simple, as is the motor bracket itsself, if you don't already have one.

The block clamp that holds the support tube was the hardest part to make.

You'll need some heavy duty iron and a torch to heat it so you can bend it. It's not the prettiest, and it's not stainless, but once I paint it, no one will ever notice it.

I made the mistake of attaching mine to the transom without checking the clearance of the splash well cover when the motor is tilted up. I mounted it too high, and consequently had to turn the piece that attaches to the transom upside down to give me enough clearance. It makes the angle to the motor bracket pretty extreme, and I was going to straighten it out some, but it works just fine. So, I'm going to leave it just like it is.

The only thing I didn't make was the support tube. I robbed one off of a 1976 Glastron that was rotting out at my Dad's house. I cleaned it up and greased the heck out of it. it worked perfectly.

Let me know if I can provide any more info for you.

"the ezy-glide is for port side cable entry only." read all my post.

"and reverse the tube, easily done."

you unscrew the grease zerk, take the tube out of the mount, and just turn it around, replace zerk. you now have the right hand mount. i do it all the time.

Is that a tube clamp that is in the pic? (rusted thing on starboard side of motor). Is there another one on the port side?

Re: motor swap need help on steering conversion

Thanks for all the advice.

Johnny Too Bad, that bracket looks good to me. Could you please post a couple more picture so I can see the rest of the system.

TD, now that I have seen a good picture of the Ezy-Glide, it definitely looks like the simplest solution. I can see that flipping the tube would be easy. I have found an Ezy-glide on ebay for $130 but would cost me $250 with shipping duty and taxes.

Lion Hunter, The bracket on the starboard transom appears to have held the starboard end of the tube on the old steering system. The clamp end of the bracket is shaped like it would hold a ball the size of a golf ball. I wish I knew what the rest of the system looked like. It is on an early 70s 17.5 ft Crestliner Muskie. It was a push/pull system.

Re: motor swap need help on steering conversion

Here ya go ...

This one is the clevis kit and the motor bracket. It's a little hard to see since I strapped the controls to the front of the motor to keep them out of the way.
clevis.jpg

This one you can see the extreme angle I was talking about since I had to turn my transom mount block clamp upside down to keep from violating the splash well cover when I tilted the motor up.
steering.jpg

This one shows that even with the bad angle, the steering cable still scopes out enough to give me plenty of turning radius.
steering2.jpg

Shows where the steering cable attaches to the support tube.
steering3.jpg

All-in-all, less than $7.00 worth of material to build.

Hope this helps,

Re: motor swap need help on steering conversion

Also, I wanted to reiterate what Tashasdaddy wrote in another post I came across when I was researching how to make this conversion. Make sure the bracket is sturdy. You don't want it to break at WOT and dump somebody out of the boat!

BTW, it looks like you already have a bracket for the support tube in place. If so, the clevis kit is a piece of cake. Just make sure it has enough give to accomodate when tilting the motor. Then all you would need is the support tube, which I've seen new for about $20.00.
