Re: Motor stuck in gear, wont start
Welcome ranger!

I think you've unknowingly answered a question I had on another post.....

The engine will stay in gear until the engine starts. It's set up that way in case the shift solenoids fail while on the water. You would have forward gear to get home on.

First thing to do is to check and see if you have spark to the cylinders. If the engine won't even cough, most likely you have none. The amplifier is feed 12V to set up the ignition. Check for 12V DC at the amplifier purple wire. You also have a distributor and points under the flywheel that may need maint.

To check for spark from the ignition coil, you can unscrew the ignition coil lead from the distributor and using insulated pliers, hold the lead about 3/8" from a clean engine ground and have a helper crank the engine. You should see a series of fast sparks coming from the lead jumping to ground. If you don't see sparks, then either the 12V to the amp is gone or the amp has failed. If you do have spark, check under the flywheel for a bad distributor or points...the points are set at .010 so make sure the gap is right.
