lower unit was damaged and replaced in my evin.150 (1995) this was done in july engine ran but did not sound right. each time i went out (and the boat was not running long) i would not be able to start it. Ended up getting towed in.changed batteries, connections, cleaned or replaced tightened everything up- checked gas flow -changed ball. This was over a period of 3 times this year the 4th time the mechanic is telling me my engine is shot- what could have done this?? I am wondering if it has anything to do with lower unit?? Any suggestions?? the mechanic just seems interested in selling me another engine- and can't seem to answer questions. thanks

Re: motor shot??

I agree get another opinion. What are the symptoms? Does it turn over and not fire, will it turn over. Could be something not working when it is warm.

Re: motor shot??

the first time i broke down it was cranking but not turning over, cranked long enough to lower batteries-towed and charged batteries, it did start. i replaced one older battery thinking it might not be holding charge-mechanic was sure it was in the battery. replaced connection to the starter.
The second time,it seemed like the gas flow, seemed to bog down after a short run and stalled out-this time again we cranked until the battery got weak, when we got to the dock we charged batteries and after awhile it started-definitely got gas because it flooded. i changed the ball anyway and checked connections.
the third time i went out , i was very scepticle so i went a short distance at a slow rate, anchored up to porgy fish-after about an hour started and moved a short distance re-anchored. fished about an hour and started up again. now being a little more confident i opened up the throttle, about 3400 rpms, i felt it bog down , so i came to a stop and stalled, motor seemed hot , anchored up and sat for awhile, and wouldn't start, towed in. The mechanic said it turned over the next day-- we told him something has to be wrong . he checked the thermostats, and says oil was not going up to the plugs, i mix my oil and gas and have been doing so for years i don't understand if the gas is coming through where is the oil.?? Big Headache!!

Re: motor shot??

Miguel....from what you have posted, it sounds as if the engine is overheating. It's also possible your over heat alarm is not working. These are JUST possibilities.

If you are not familiar with engines, I would change mechanics as the other guys posted and have the engine gone over.

If you want to get involved in it, get yourself an OEM service manual from a Johnson/Evinrude dealership and go through it. We are here to help if ya' get stuck.

Re: motor shot??

Miguel: Is this mechanic the one who changed the lower unit? If everything was okay before that and only the lower unit was replaced, then the water pump and its delivery has to be suspect. If that's the case, there could also be debris in the topside water circuits. As outboard problems go, this one is not huge, yet. Alcan and Jim are right one about getting a new mechanic. This one sounds like a crook-- and too inept to make a living on technical merit. Ask around while reading up!! :)

Re: motor shot??

Did the mechanic give you any reason for saying the motor's shot? In replacing the lower unit, they may have mistakenly messed up the water pump & now you're overheating - which would certainly hurt the motor. However, you should have heard your overheat horn go off if that's the case, so by no means certain.

Re: motor shot??

the mechanic said that it is seized up nothing would turn-and in talking to you guys and to another mechanic.-well we came to the realization that the mechanic may have royally screwed up because he cut the drive shaft when he changed the lower unit to make it fit. what do i know?? the new mechanic told us this was no good, true??? it seems like i'll be burying that engine.thanks again

Re: motor shot??

Well Miguel most states have a wonderful institution for situations such as yours. It is called small claims court. Check it out.

Re: motor shot??

Miguel: You don't need to bury that engine yet! After you're done in small claims court, the new, good mechanic can do the job right with the right lower unit. Doesn't sound like the top is bad, yet.
Are we going to see you on "Court TV"? I'd like to see Judge Judy work this guy over!!
Solittle, what're you gonna do on the crank topic you posted evening of Sept. 17?

Re: motor shot??

The first thing you need to do is drop the lower unit and then see if the powerhead is siezed. Your problem could very well be the L/U itself.
