Motor runs good but only 2600 rpms

Hello. I recently bought a 2000 crestliner 1850 with a 125 Mercury motor. The motor seems to run good. Problem is it only runs at 2600 rpm. Lout new plugs, but still the same. I have a 3 blade aluminum 17 pitch prop on it right now. From what I've heard this motor should run at 5500. What should I try next? I'm not a mechanic, but I'm not helpless either. Thanks

First thing to do is a compression check...next thing to do is a spark test..next test you need a dva adapter and meter to check the stator.....common problem along with switch box failure on Mercury...Fuel system needs to be check i.e the bulb and pump.....the list goes on but this is the basics....

Ok. Thank you. Let ya no what I come up with.

Got the boat back. Everything tested good. Did replace the bulb, and the plug wires. Runs like a champ now.
