Re: Motor Pivet Locked Up HELP PLEASE!!!!!

The cable must be disconnected on the engine end (just to be specific). The cable runs tru a tube on the top of the transom mount.
This is where they usually sieze up.
Also the engine has a large hinge, that must be greased reqularly. When you have removed the cable from where it attaches to the motor, it should turn free. Sometimes, an engine that has sat for a couple years will sieze at the hinge, and you will have to work it back and forth, and little-by-little, it will eventually staert to free up.
Now, where the cable runs thru the tube, there is a nut on both ends of the tube.
Remove them, and see if you can get the cable's shaft out of the tube. Once you get it out, you can use a shotgun bor brush to clean the rust out of the tube. Check to make sure the helm steers ok,and if it does, re-install the cable shaft in the tube. Grease the two fittings on the tube, until it starts to come out of one side or the other or both, and re-intall the end nuts.

I have the cable off and the helm turns fine, moving the steering cable back and forth. But the engine (without cable on) still will not move, it seems stuck, i have shot greese into the fitting on the engine so see if i can free it up but it still is stuck,,, i fear that pushing to hard will hurt it and cause more problems is that true,,, or do i keep moving it little by little and see if it works...

Seems like it is really tight..

Re: Motor Pivet Locked Up HELP PLEASE!!!!!

Alex, I just read your previous thread. You will have to "put your back in to it",and don't be afraid of breaking anything. There is no locking mechanism whatsoever.
And besides, anything that will disable your abilty to steer the boat, you had best break before using the boat. You wouldn't want to be comming up on a jetty at WOT, only to find you cannot steer.
I can gaurantee the hinge has siezed up. It probably won't be easy, but keep trying eventually, it WILL loosen up. Grease all the fittings you can find back there, until it is oozing-out on the driveway. If any fitting will not take grease, remove the fitting, and install a new one.
Good luck , and let us know how you are getting on with it.

Thanks for the help... i will do some serious push and pull action, then work on the engine if my wife lets me get up.....

I have also called a few local guys and they said to torch it and heat it up that will loosen the old greese and crap in there...

what do you guys think of that idea...???

If you don't care how the engine looks, use some heat. But it will destroy the paint job.
Also, these parts are cast aluminum, and too much heat will melt it.
There are rubber seals at the top and bottom too.
It took me 2 days to free up a 35HP Merc once.

Re: Motor Pivet Locked Up HELP PLEASE!!!!!

Salt water did the same thing to my old Merc. once. I took out the grease fitting and used penetrating oil squirted into the hole. Alot of muc came out. I then made a small cone and put it into the hole and filled her up with the lube. Next day, I was able to budge her. Continued this action of lube and wiggle for 3 days. Loosened up and works great. I had my motor on its side however you may have to use a small tube on the end of the cone if the motor is still upright. Good luck!

Hey Alex,
You may want to try a penetrating oil that is a little more "industrial strength" than WD40. The first quarter inch is the hard part. Once you get some play, you will be on your way.

I am always thinking of "solutions" and if I was in your situation, I might try using a 2X4, a 2 ton hydraulic jack, and an unmovable object as tools. But for the sake of someone getting hurt, or something getting broken, I am not going suggest how to use them.

I am always getting hurt and breaking things, but then again, I get alot of stuff working that wasn't! ;)

Tell you what krosemond, I'll head to NC and we'll hook that 2 ton ***** up and see what we can break.....

Now to be serious, i thank all of you for the advise, I have called a few guys locally now and they all say the same thing "we need to take the entire engine apart and clean out the shaft" at a min cost of $700.00 or buy a NEW ENGINE

I have a hard time shelling out all that money for something that is stuck from old greese and salt..and forget buying a new engine.. this runs like a top, just won't turn..

How do i get that fitting off?, and what industrial spay can i shoot in there to break the crap up? this cannot be the end of my engine, salt and rust is not that strong..

Re: Motor Pivet Locked Up HELP PLEASE!!!!!

The 2 ton jack doesn't weigh 2 tons, it can just lift 2 tons. They are actually quite small.

When I was in the keys this past spring, I had a heck of a time getting my boat out of the water on a ramp slippery with inches of turtle grass. When I finally got it out, the boat was on the trailer crooked, but I was not about too put it back down on that ramp. So I went back to the hotel, pulled the boat close to a cinder block building on a gravel driveway. I then jacked the back of the boat up, secured it on some blocks I was able to scrounge up, and then used the jack, the building and a 2X4 to push the trailer straight under the boat. Instead of straightening the boat on the trailer, I straightened the trailer under the boat.

Get my drift?

You only need to get that engine to START moving. Once it starts, you can work it back and forth.

700 smackers??!!! !@#$ $%^*!,Alex! Go with a case of liquid wrench, and, (as Ma Clump says,) "Hercules-hercules-hercules!" I'd have me a barbeque, and invite all my giant friends, and challenge them to free it up.
They will all try to "out grunt" the other, until it's moving...Then y'all can move the barbeque to the water :)
Just a sugjestion :)

Just wanted to drop a note and tell all involved that the motor is free and moving again...

i used light heat to break up some of the larger bits of crap, and a huge amount of greese and muscle power for the rest....

Thank you all for your advise on this, now that she's able to turn again i'll be seeing you on the water...
