I have a 95 mercury 4hp outboard motor and it runs ok but isn't pumping any water out the pee hole,I called a couple repair shops and they say water pump and water impeller does this motor have a thermostat and could that be it or should I just take it to the shop?

i think you should see some flow regardless of the thermostat. you may have an obstruction somewhere. you could drop the lower unit and check the water pump. just replaced mine, took about 2 hours on a 150hp johnson. the shop manual was a necessity. good luck-

dmcnw,First thing you want to do is to insure that the waterpump indicator hose and or nipple is not plugged with debris.Try using a paper clip or similar tool and rod out the nipple. You may have to remove the hose that exits the engine block and clear block fitting and blow through hose to insure there are no obstructions.<br />Worst case ,your water pump is worn out ,and will need replacing.

The pee hole shows water pressure from the pump and has nothing to do with thermostats. If no water from pee pipe it may be clogged. But most likely you need a new water pump. Dont be cheep replace the whole pump not just the impeller it will only cost a few bucks more but save you in the long run. $30.00 for a pump kit or replace the motor

I have a Merc 40 (old, 80's) and am having the same problem with lack of water exiting the "pee hole". You guys seem to know your stuff. Can you help me salvage this distressed motor. Where can I find parts?

Before you go too far into your motor, run a piece of string trimmer string up your pee hole ( I know, this sounds painful). Mud dobbers love to nest in these things for some reason. I usually leave the string up in the hole on my Merc 200 20 hp motor just to keep them out between fishing trips, but if I don't it is always plugged the next time I go out. You'll be amazed at what will come out of there when you clear it. You will need something long enough to get well up in there, or as suggested above remove the tube to clear it. <br /><br />Then do go ahead and replace the impeller, it's good preventive medicine.
