This is the engine bay to my 1976 Wellcraft nova 250. I just replaced the stringers and Bulkheads. I'm sure that the wood in the engine bay is soft too. What would be the best to deal with the this? GetAttachment.jpg:

Re: Motor mounts

If you've read many of the other restoration threads, you have probably seen advice to drill test holes into the wood core of structures such as the transom (start low) and your motor mounts. If you replaced stringers and bulkheads, the motor mounts are most likely also rotten, and if the rot started within the transom from poorly sealed external hardware mounts or undrained bilge water, then the transom will be needed as well.

There are scores of projects here that have taken on that task, and reading those that have "been-there, done-that" can give you ideas, tips, and examples of things to avoid.

For your own use mostly, but also for the voyeurs here, take pictures of EVERYTHING from several angles before and during removal of any hardware and structure. It serves as a great reference and reminder when putting it back. Place a measuring device like a tape measure in the pic to record dimensions that are difficult to document on paper. Document all dimensions -- thickness, distances from static landmarks X, Y and Z.

And finally, post your progress here so the resident band of self-taught professionals (and a few actual pros as well) can lend a hand, answer questions and mostly, cheer you on.

Re: Motor mounts

I did a resto on my 89 SR 180 last year, ALL the wood was rotten. The original mounts looked fine till I cut them out and found they were hollow! The FB masked the fact the water had taken out the wood inside completely. At some point they would have collapsed. New mounts were not hard. My mounts are shaped like an inverted squared off U shape. I rebuilt using 2 vertical pieces of 3/4 ply either side with 2 x horizontals across the top, so you end up with 1?" thick ply. Some just use good old 2 x 4's. The 2 x 3/4 plywood mount frames were glued and screwed together, then plenty sealed with poly resin. On installation, I used 1708 to tab them in good and tight. You need to insure that the replacement mounts are the same height as your old ones, so accurate measurements and photos are essential to the task.
