Ok, I am taking on the next step on my stringer replacement project. I found someone who will pull and store my motor. I need to remove the motor mounts to the fiberglass hull and repair. I have been trying to find someplace with information on rebuilding the mounts. Do they just go in like you would glue and glass in new stringers? How close do I need to get with location so I can still align the motor? Can someone direct me in the right direction for some information on motor mounts?

Thanks for the help. I will update my pics on the stringer job here shortly. I am still have computer problems at home.

I replied to the duplicate post before it got deleted, but hooray for cut-and-paste!

Some motor mounts are wood, some are metal, some are glass. They all have the same purpose - to hold the motor at the right height and angle to drive the drivetrain... be it an inboard shaft, a V-drive, a transmission, or a stern drive.

For yours, what you probably want to do is measure the current mounts before you remove them, and just rebuild them with dry/good materials to within about 1/4" of their current height, width, and angle. The idea is to keep the height within the range that the motor mounts can adjust for, so you can get a perfect alignment with properly adjusted motor mounts.

As far as materials, a lot of people use similar stuff as for stringers... basically wood encased in fiberglass. There are also some good examples of metal angle iron being used... that'll never rot.

For the last set of mounts I fixed, I just dug the wood out of the fiberglass, leaving hollow shells, and filled them up with wood and glass, kinda similar to seacasting them. Worked nice.

Show us some pictures of your current mounts and we'll give you some ideas.

Re: Motor Mounts

I just rebuilt mine. Transom, 3 stringers on each side, floor, engine bay.
A few pics to show you what I had:

And a few to show you what I ended up with:

I have more of my finished product complete with motor mounts. Ill post them as soon as I get them loaded on photobucket. I probable have overkill on my rebuild. I cut away all the rotted wood untill I got to good wood. I doubled up on the stringers, used cross members along with stringers in the engine bay. I used Poplar wood (plywood for the floor). Be sure you take good measurments. Ill post pics of my finished engine bay this evening.

Ok, here are my finished pics:

I still have to get in there and pretty everything up. I need to grind/sand down the rough edges, vacume and wipe down. The floor is only temporary. This next of season, I will strip down everything from the engine bay forward, replace the whole floor, and give it new carpet. Let me know what you think.

All this makes me wonder if we can ditch the wood for mounts- is seacast good for lag bolts keeping a good grip?
Gary H, any experience with this?

IMG 2309; I missed what was filled in, before you glassed upper wood blocks to them, for the mounts.

Just an extra stringer along with cross members for support to hold the motor mount platforms.

Re: Motor Mounts

In one pic, I saw hollow mounts and stringers, then didn't see what was in them before you capped them.

Re: Motor Mounts

I see. I put in one more stringer, and cross members on each side before capping them. Oh, and the foam.

Re: Motor Mounts

F/G; is fiberglass. Just curious as what material is in that f/g shell, that the motor mount material was attached to the top of it.

Yes, the stringers are encased in F/G, and I replaced the foam in between the stringers.

Re: Motor Mounts

The pic showed a f/g stringer/ mount with out a top, before you installed 2 pieces of wood, glassed, on top.
What did you fill the bottom f/g shell with? the one that attaches to the hull?

Re: Motor Mounts

3 cross members running perpendicular to the stringers, flush with the top of the stringers, running down to the hull. F/G encased, as well. Then the foam that I took out of the boat when I began my rebuild. Also glassed inbetween each piece of wood.

Inother words, the cap that the motor mounts rest on, sits on 2 stringers, 3 cross members, and 2 bulkheads, all encased in F/G, and the cavities are filled with the old foam.

How exactly would you fill the shells with wood and fiberglass ?
And, what exactly is "seacasting" ?
