Re: Motor in or out of gear?

I had heard this many moons ago. Never really gave it much thought. Like it was said earlier, gear oil!
I do, however, remove my prop from the drive when I am going up north to the lake. Not because of spinning, but because I don't like buying new props.
I had one stolen right off of my boat once while we were all in eating lunch.
As far as the spinning, I have seen props spin on the highway. They are generaly smaller outboards. And they do not do it as a constant. I think wind, speed, and drag all have to be just right.

I think I'd rather have it in neutral in case my prop hits something. And as a salt water boter, if it does spin and work the lube around, that's a good thing.

Re: Motor in or out of gear?

I think the concern is burning out prop seals as there is no water on the outside of the prop. I was showing the mechanic at the dealer that I thought there was some unusual gear noise in forward with the boat on the trailer (muffs on) and he yelled at me to put it back into nuetral before I burn the seals out. To me, he's an idiot and I should be looking for another mechanic, but maybe that's the thought for putting the drive into gear. Although, wouldn't that also open up the carbs possibly causing flooding problems if you had a float issue?
