motor HP recommendation?

Re: motor HP recommendation?

Today, I found a verry clean and great running 1981 Johnson 25hp outboard. The guy that sold it to me buys/trades/repairs/sells outboard motors as kinda of a hobby. He thoroughly goes thru every motor he sells. This baby was tuned-up and ready to go. When I ask to do a compression test, he firmly recommended it, and actually did it for me and I watched the guage. Anyway, this motor ran sweet and clean as a whistle.

After I agreed to buy it,
I mentioned I would winterize when I got home and he gladly did it for me right there on the spot. Also, I just mentioned I was going to build a motor stand for it, and he search his garage and found one for me (for free). I had to drive an hour to this guys place, but it was well worth it. What a great buying experience!
I would highly recommend him to anyone in the twin cities area. Great guy and trustworthy.

Also, thanks for all the helpful advice on this forum.

My new motor...

Sorry. I just noticed I owe a reply on this thread. The guy is located in Janesville. He keeps a boat motors post going on craigslist. Just search "janesville" on Minneapolis craigslist.

Re: motor HP recommendation?

I didn't see this thread the first time around... Congrat's on getting the new rig. I have a similar boat (different brand, and without the plywood floor). 25 hp pushes it very nicely. I've even used mine for tubing and skiing (pulling smallish kids on 2 skis). I think you'll be glad you got a 16'... with more bottom area, I think they plane more easily (especially with some load) than a 14' boat. I ran mine with a 15 hp for a couple years. It pushed it surprisingly well.

You might want to get a prop of a different pitch once you have a chance to try it out with typical loads next year.

Re: motor HP recommendation?

yea, I was hoping to have time to try it out this year, but the guy that stores my boat told me to bring it over.

I'm glad to hear your 25hp pushes your 16' well. I'm hoping mine works out too. The boat weighs 400lbs, but the previous owner said he used a 15hp and fished with 2 other guys.

Yea, I was curious about the prop too. Not sure whats on there now. Anyway, I can hardly wait til Spring.

Thanks.

Re: motor HP recommendation?

Just FYI, my older (1970) 25 hp pushed the boat about 26 mph with a light load, and lost a few mph with more load (9" pitch prop), my 15 hp would push it almost the same (~25) if the boat was empty (also 9" pitch prop), but really slow down (~20 or less) if there were a few people in the boat. Still had no problem planing the boat. Biggest difference was how well speed was maintained when adding weight to the boat. Last season I put on a new 25 EFI 4 stroke merc... With a light load it'll push ~33 mph... (11" pitch prop). BTW, these are all fishfinder wheel speedo indicated speeds, not gps. Slows down a few mph with a load in the boat.

My older 25 hp was the 18 cubic inch version (smaller displacement than yours) and it seemed to perform better at higher rpm's... yours has more displacement/torque and would likely be able to swing a higher pitch prop (?).

Good luck.

Re: motor HP recommendation?

Good info.
So the 11" gave you noticeable performance?
I look-up props for mine. Seems 4 sizes are available, 9"-12".

Also, is there a cheap/easy way to measure RPM?

Oh, by the way, here are some pics of my 1977 Crestliner Voyager Deluxe 16' boat. She had a side console in a previous life, but I think I prefer the open space better.

Re: motor HP recommendation?

nice looking boat... like my 16' edson, but mine has no plywood floor and still has the bench seats. Mine also has a splash well at the back... it's a nice feature... especially if you ever take a wave over the back.

I also had/have an 11" pitch for my old 25 hp, but it seemed to lug the motor. It was marginally faster with an empty boat, but any weight at all and it'd be struggling. The 9" pitch seemed better for that motor. My new 25 definitely has quite a bit more power than my old one (it's rated at the prop, old one would've been rated at the crank) and swings an 11" pitch easily. But I have never hit the rev limiter on it at WOT, even with an empty boat, so I think I'm OK pitch wise. If I had hit the rev limiter, I'd have gone up to a 12" pitch. 10" pitch was the 'standard' (usual) pitch for my old 25 hp.

search the forums for "tiny tach" and see what comes up... I had intended to rig up a tach last season (to confirm rpm's on my new motor), but never got to that. If you have a fancy timing light, you might be able to use that.

I'd imagine a 10 or 11" would be right for your rig... what's on the motor now?

BF, that newer 25 has about 10 more cubic inches than our 1976 and before 22 CID 25s, and a lot more power. Keep that in mind when choosing a prop.

BTW, I located that guy's ad on Craigslist and printed it out, with his phone number. I'll look there first for my next motor.

I couldn't see a part number on it. I guess I would have to take it off to find the part number?

edit: The condition and paint is consistent with the rest of the motor, so I would assume its original and whatever came standard on this motor.

edit2: OK, I verified the prop supplied with the motor is 11" pitch. Also, the horsepower is listed under powerhead in the spec. Gee, I knew the manual would come in handy for something.

You won't be dissappointed. What a great guy. He's a talker too. Btw, it's a big lake down there, Lake Elysian. I never heard of it before, but I would like to try it out..
