motor dumps out from WOT to idle

hello all I hope someone here can help me with my outboard. It seems fine, runs smooth and fast, till i slightly pull back on throttle. Then it dumps back to idle after spitting and jerking . put it back in gear and all seems fine again till i pull back on throttle slightly. all i know about the motor is as follows 1992 Johnson fast strike ,loop charged v6. I assume it's something to do with the timing ,but don;t know much about that. It dumps out so hard and fast, that it threw my frind from his seat to the deck.will be very grateful for any advise ,thanks in advavce charles

One item that comes to mind is insure that the timer base under the flywheel has free unrestricted movement from idle to wide open throttle position all the way to its rubber stop.

any of the cables binding up then snapping back have someone look engine off cowl off and see if the linkage is going back and forth smoothly if it is I agree what the admiral says
