Motor Cowling question

After a long, cold winter I am finally getting around to working on my 1972 15' Chapparal tri-hull which has been sitting in the yard patiently awaiting the day when 1. I had a job again, and 2. The weather was warm enough in the evenings to work on it. That time is now. I've begun the arduous task of cutting and grinding in preparation to replace the deck, transom, and stringer. In the meantime, I keep rubbing against the motor cowling of the '72 50 HP Evinrude motor, and every time I do I break out in a rash which I assume is from fiberglass. What do I need to do to that engine cover? Sand and paint? If so, does someone have a procedure for this i.e. what type of sandpaper, what type of paint, etc? I've tried to search on the iboats site for an answer, and while the question has been asked several times, I have not found the answer. Thanks much in advance!
