Glad to see that the moron in question owned up to his crime.

I would still like to see a public humiliation as part of the punishment. I suggest that he be requisitioned to clean up several miles of trash along the river and maximum fines levied. Possibly force him to wear a plywood sign that says:

"I illegally poach rare fish and kill them before returning them to the water...kick me"

I also like CAT's idea about banning him from fishing as well. You mess with the bull you get the horns buddy

As it was said earlier, "probably had someone who wanted to mount it and paid him well for it".

That fish is nowhere near the wet side of a river. More than likely, it's already got a spot on some "safari guided" hunters' wall.

Public outrage and demand should be loud enough for the court to throw every possible maximum punishment at him...but reading what the max allowed is...still will not be enough.
They can, and likely will revoke his priveledges, but be realistic, he wasn't to worried about leagalities the first (are we sure this is his first) time.

Let's take him out to the east coast and try that live bait thing for sharks.

Looks like he will not be fishing for the next 3.5 years at least (not legally at least).

Seems like 3+ years and a big fine is adequate punishment to me. It's a fish, after all, not a person. He won't soon forget his lesson, I imagine.
