Re: Moron kills 5ft Sturgeon in Michigan

I hope he's caught and fined and his fishing license revoked for several years. There are many sturgeon in both the St. Croix and Mississippi Rivers here. I've caught a couple, and released them immediately. There's a short season for them on the St. Croix, but I don't fish it, and would release any I caught during that period.

They're an amazing fish, having survived for millions of years virtually unchanged. Someday, with the help of anglers and the DNR, there may be enough of them to warrant keeping one or two. They're quite tasty, I hear. For now, though, they should be left alone or released if caught by accident.

I gotta be honest, I did not know you couldn't keep them. Well, it may be different in FL, not sure. Never really tried fishing for them or inquiring. If I recall correctly, we have a problem with those fish down here jumping out of the water and injuring people in passing boats. The last story I remember is a kid being towed on a tube had his arm broken by a flying sturgeon.

He will be caught, there are to many people in this area that love the outdoors we have in michigan and are willing to protect them.
Proof of that is people turning in the picture and telling him to release it.

Is that a cast nest or a giant dip net? He obviously knew what he's doing to bring along something that big. Some of the comments posted on that site questioned how could anyone be so sure that he knowingly broke the law. I say he knew it that's why he took off soon after he landed the fish. Maybe he is a former Big 3 employee who got lay off. He figured the meat would feed his family for awhile and if the fish was pregnant the caviar would give him some gas money for his truck.

Most likely it is a landing net. Also in question is why someone did not get his license plate number.

On another note, there is a brief sturgeon season in northern Michigan. It is a limited time (until the whole lake makes its limit, typically takes one day only for the lake to get its limit) and is for spearing thru the ice. Not exactly catch and release fishing.

Plenty of legal eating fish a guy can catch. There's no excuse for what this guy did.

On another forum I just withness via Utube some rich boaters using cats and dogs as bait for shark fishing ... that happened in Venezuela.

The boater where from North America and claimed they were helping the local humaine animal society with their overflow of cats and dogs ... Unfortunatly I lost the link ... but I ll keep on looking for it ... How low can humains go ...??

I hope they catch this guy. He didn't even legally land the fish. Up here we have some lakes with Lake Sturgeon and I believe there is a 1 a year limit of a certain size. Hard to enforce a limit like that but I would hope anyone that catches one practices safe catch and release. It's a magnificent fish and I would be just happy catching one of them in my lifetime just for my photo album.

I may not love cats, I own one, but I would much rather have two dogs than one cat and one dog (currently). However, I do not condone ANY animal abuse. Animals can't tell anyone, and can't defend themselves. I would like to take all those fishermen in that video, and make "tiger bait" out of them. Let's go on a tour at the zoo, and they can "accidentally" fall into the tiger pit. That is sick, and I would be more than happy to tell those people how I feel about it. My entire family, from generations back, would go out of their way to help an animal in distress, and I am no different.
Now, if that video is fake, I'd be relieved.

I don't feel snagging is fishing anyway, and that is what the report says he was doing. I would almost bet he was a poacher who either a) wanted to mount it himself, or b) had someone willing to mount a sturgeon and was paying well for him to catch it. He hooked it on a rope, and landed it with a net big enough to land such a fish. He knew what he was doing I am sure.

I can't believe that someone THAT proficient would be accidentally landing a sturgeon.

As far as the Sturgeon goes, ignorance is not an excuse. People know who he is and aren't fessing up. You know he showed it around like a trophy, who wouldn't? Especially if you didn't know any better.

For the dogs and cats, however it is done, I am not in favor of it. I just found on snopes.com that this dog bait for sharks is somewhat true. It didn't happen with live dogs, however they show a photo of a live puppy with a double hook setup through its top lip, the article from the following link says that road kill and deceased animals from the overpopulation are used by a small group of amateur fishermen. The link is http://www.snopes.com/critters/crusader/sharkbait.asp if you want to check it out for yourselves.

He's Been caught!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! YES!!!!!!! :D

Just released:

Grand Rapids Man Scheduled for Arraignment July 9 in Sturgeon Poaching
Case

A 30-year old Grand Rapids man is scheduled to be arraigned July 9 in
61st District Court in Grand Rapids on charges that he illegally caught
and possessed a lake sturgeon. The charges stem from a May 17 incident
on the Grand River in downtown Grand Rapids, when the man allegedly
hooked the fish in the tail, brought it to the river bank, dragged it to
a waiting pickup truck and left the area.

Several onlookers took photos on their cellphones of the man, and
called after him to return the fish to the river, but he ignored them.
Conservation officers from the Department of Natural Resources also will
be seeking charges against the man?s father, who allegedly aided and
abetted the man at the scene, providing the pickup truck and driving
away from the location.

The man turned himself in to the DNR?s Report All Poaching Hotline
shortly after seeing media reports in the Grand Rapids area about the
search for information on the incident.

Conservation officers have attempted to recover the fish, which the man
told them he returned to the river dead, but the fish has not been
located.

Poaching a lake sturgeon is punishable with jail time of 30 to 180
days, fines from $500 to $2,000, court costs and $1,500 in restitution
to the state. Penalties also include revocation of his fishing license
for the remainder of this year and for three following years.

The lake sturgeon is a protected species in Michigan, and is listed as
a threatened species on the state?s threatened and endangered species
list. It is illegal to keep them on most Michigan waters, with the
exception of limited seasons on Black Lake in Cheboygan County, the
Michigan-Wisconsin boundary waters, Otsego Lake in Otsego County and on
Lake St. Clair and the St. Clair River. Anglers who catch a lake
sturgeon are required, under Michigan fishing regulations, to release
them immediately.

The DNR is working to restore the native lake sturgeon population.
Sturgeon can live to be 100 years old, but do not reproduce until later
in life. It takes male sturgeons 15 to 20 years to reach sexual
maturity, and females 20 to 25 years. Sturgeon spawn every four years.

Anyone with information about the incident or about the man who poached
the fish should call the DNR?s Report All Poaching (RAP) Line at
800-292-7800. Information may be left confidentially.
