i have a 50ESL 720 johnson motor how can i get more power out of the motor. Can i change the head

In any motor hop-up, it's more than one component to make any substantial increase..
Head, reeds, carb jetting and most important, porting, and a lighter piston.
Then you'll need to change the prop.
NONE of which is cheap.

Fine tuning the rigging of your outboard will gain you much more performance than hundreds of bux worth of hop up on the engine.

It would probably be less expensive to buy a 60Hp from that period than to try to get 10 more HP from what you have.

Welcome to ibaots.

I am with everyone else, you can hop up an engine but you need to have alot of knowledge about 2 strokes, an extensive garage and a thick wallet.

Faztbullit is an engine guy that can actually do all those things and if he wouldn't mess with it you shouldn't either.

As JB said just make sure your engine/boat is set up properly with the correct engine height and prop, just raising the engine to the correct height can get you some pretty good gains.

Also weight distribution can get some gains.

I have tried about everything to get my boat faster other than dinking with the engine and have found it is what it is, I got a couple MPH more and that is all she has, speed on water takes alot of power and the little bit you may get by tinker with your engine may get you 1-2 mph and is more likey to ruin your engine.
