I just purchased a 18' pontoon with a 1998 J10RELEC (9.9) motor. I would like some more power. Can I change the carb or jetting on existing carb to find it. How will this affect life of engine. Also what should I expect for WOT?

Thanks

Re: more grunt

Carb & timing might do the trick but I don't know for sure. The hot ticket is just get a bigger engine. Lot less hassle.

c/6

Hooty

Re: more grunt

Thanks Hooty, I wish it was that easy. I'm dealing with a restricted HP lake limited to 10HP so unfortunately that's not an option.

Oh.
Well, just put the 9.9 decals on a 235. They'd never know. ;)

c/6

Hooty

UUUHHHHH....Hooty....don't think that will work...prop wash is a dead give away.

Hi t1.....some guys I know will change the carb out to a 15hp carb. (With the bigger carb, you get some more rpms) Then get a four blade prop for the engine. These props I believe are an 8 degree pitch. Made for a little push power. Other than that, the 235 is the only other choice.

Re: more grunt

A 235, huh? Where do I get the decals?
After running the rig for a week I'm noticing some other problems. There are definitely some electrical gremlins at work here. The boat is a '98 Playbouy that has been sitting for a year.
The only dash gauge that moves is the tach and it arcs CCW from a 6:00 position, instead of zero, to about 6200 RPMs - even @ idle. The motor has overheated twice, so I know I'm looking at a waterpump. It also stalls occasionally when I throttle down into to neutral/ idle. This may be from some old gas left in the on-board tank - I hope!
Also at WOT the motor will sometimes lift out of the water. I have adjusted the trim and it still does it to some extent.
Looks like some serious TLC(and patience)is in order.
Thanks for your help for a newbie.

Re: more grunt

Decals available from manufacturer.

Does the restriction specifically say that the boat is limited to ONLY ONE 10hp engine? Or that outboards are limited to 10hp? How would 3 10's look hanging off the back?

Re: more grunt

I would have to say 3 10's would look darn sporty.
