Report: ‘Last rites’ administered
Italian media reported that the pope John Paul has received the Roman Catholic sacrament reserved for the sick and dying, commonly referred to as last rites.

A Vatican spokesman said he could not confirm the reports but Church sources said it was likely the Pontiff had received the sacrament, given the precarious state of his health.

The sacrament, which involves anointing the sick person with special oils, was once called last rites or extreme unction. It is now known as the Sacrament of the Infirm.

The last time the Pope was known to have received the sacrament was on May 13, 1981, the day he was shot and nearly killed in an assassination attempt in St Peter’s Square.

AGI news agency quoted an unnamed cardinal as saying the Pope was administered the sacrament earlier in the day and that he was in a “very serious” condition.

Earlier, the Italian news agencies Apcom and ANSA said the pope had suffered an alarming drop in blood pressure Thursday evening.

A urinary infection can produce fever and a drop in blood pressure as reported in the pope, said Dr. Marc Siegel, a specialist in internal medicine at the New York University Medical Center.

One is Dionigi Tettamanzi, the archbishop of Milan, the largest Catholic diocese in Europe, and he’s a bioethicist by trade.

Another is Severino Poletto, the archbishop of Turin, who’s got a lower profile.

Angelo Scola is the patriarch of Venice, a city that has given the church a pope three times in the 20th century, and a scholar.

Francis Arinze also meets the criteria. He is a Nigerian with a fascinating personal story. His father was a chieftain, and he converted and was baptized at the age of 9. In 2002, he was transferred to head of the office in charge of liturgy and sacraments in Rome.

Finally, Christoph Schönborn, who is 60, young by cardinal standards. He’s the only cardinal of electors who is titled aristocracy; he’s related by blood to every European royal family.

Well he is not doing to good this morning. Last reports was that he had suffered a heart attack on top of everything else.

He said the 84-year-old pontiff had been “informed of the gravity of his situation” and decided to remain in his apartment overlooking St. Peter’s Square, where thousands of pilgrims gathered to pray for him.

John Paul participated in Mass and received some top aides Friday morning, Navarro-Valls said.

“The pope is still lucid, fully conscious and extraordinarily serene,” Navarro-Valls said. Heart attack and heart failure are not the same thing, SBN.

The reports I have seen have been of heart failure. . . it stops pumping. This is usually fatal. It is what killed my grandmother.

Heart attack is misbehavior of the heart muscle, usually from blood supply interruption to part of it. That I have survived three of these is testimony that it is potentially fatal, but in modern times usually not.

That is a mute point at this time JB. He is going and it doesn't matter what it was now.
_____________________________________________
Updated: 6:03 p.m. ET April 1, 2005
VATICAN CITY - Pope John Paul II was near death Saturday, his breathing shallow and his heart and kidneys failing, the Vatican said. Millions of faithful around the world knelt, crawled on their knees, bowed their heads and lit candles to pray for the 84-year-old pontiff.

“This evening or this night, Christ opens the door to the pope,” Angelo Comastri, the pope’s vicar general for Vatican City, told a crowd at St. Peter’s Square, where up to 70,000 people prayed and stood vigil in the chilly night. Wrapping themselves in blankets, many tearfully gazed at John Paul’s third-floor windows, where the lights remained on early Saturday.

The Vatican said Friday morning that John Paul was in “very grave” condition after suffering blood poisoning from a urinary tract infection the previous night, but that he was “fully conscious and extraordinarily serene” and declined to be hospitalized.

By Friday night, the pope’s condition had worsened further, and he was suffering from kidney failure and shortness of breath but had not lost consciousness as of 9:30 p.m., the Vatican said.

Cardinal Javier Lozano Barragan, the Vatican’s health minister, told Mexico’s Televisa dal Vaticano that the pope “is about to die.”

“I talked to the doctors and they told me there is no more hope,” the Mexican cardinal told the television channel.

Updated: 5:04 a.m. ET April 2, 2005
VATICAN CITY - Pope John Paul II's condition remains unchanged and "very grave," and he is showing the first signs of losing consciousness, the Vatican said Saturday.

The 84-year-old pope's health has rapidly deteriorated, with his heart and kidneys failing after he suffered a urinary tract infection. But John Paul is not technically in a coma and opens his eyes when spoken to, papal spokesman Joaquin Navarro-Valls told reporters.

"Mass was celebrated at 7:30 this morning in the presence of the pope," although the pontiff did not concelebrate the rite, the spokesman said.

"Sometimes it seems as if he were resting with his eyes closed, but when you speak to him, he opens his eyes," Navarro-Valls said.

He said aides had told the pope that thousands of young people were in St. Peter's Square on Friday evening.

"In fact, he seemed to be referring to them when, in his words, and repeated several times, he seemed to have said the following sentence: I have looked for you. Now you have come to me. And I thank you,'" the spokesman said.

Re: More Breaking News(Pope)(Has died)

Last night I walked into the kitchen. My wife was sitting at the table watching TV, with tears running down her cheeks. I asked what was wrong and she responded, "The Pope is dying".

This response from her was somewhat striking. She's Southern Baptist, through-and-through.

Unlike some who just give lip service, Pope John Paul II was truly a uniter.

May he rest in peace.
