no splashwell needed..the transom is 40" high!!!!!!!!!(thats what it was on my 1972 Islander)it is as high as the gunnels!...so you do gain EXTRA standing floorspace... if there is a downside to the outboard bracket its the center of gravity getting moved so far back, and the work needed to get the motor height correct.... you should be able to mount an inch or more above normal because of the motor setback..if you had a jack plate , it would be easier, but if you want to be able to use all the movement of the jack plate, then youd be back to meticulously trying to find the motor mount height.

But can you keep it at 40”?
What is the height of a 140hp OB?

My advice is to replace the blown 120 MC with a newer Alpha One Gen2 140 and stay with the IO config.

To change from IO to OB will make a totally different boat out of it in handling and it's seaworthiness.

You'll need an OB with a 25" shaft if you go to an OB pod. Either way you'll have to add significant bracing to the stern to include knee braces in order to account for the change in stress to the hull with the OB. Adding an OB is not as easily done as one might imagine. It could cost 10 times what replacement of the IO motor would be as well as substantially more time involved in the process... most would see that as being a problem.

To be fair Bob, you're not talking about changing the boat to an outboard, you're talking about changing it to a "Sea Drive".
Just be sure that plenty of bracing is added to the inside to support the Sea Drive brackets.

this is something that has been done a thousands of times......so no new ground here....and if you can weld and fabricate it is something you can do yourself as well....its not that massive..if you buy the outboard bracket from a commercial maker... you can use common physics and you could ask the maker of the bracket for advice......hes surely been there and done that......as with anything .. the devil is in the details...this guy got a license to drive this boat probably.....what good did that do him.....he used his ignorance to ruin the boat... and that could happen to a guy adding an offshore bracket just as well....ignore the language: https://keyassets.timeincuk.net/ins...2/2015/06/Boat-stuck-under-bridge-Norfolk.jpg
