Mold Release revisited!

Ya'll may remember, a while back I made a mold to lay up a part to deflect water from running into my gas tank bay, thru the gas tank access cut out.

I now have to make another part for a different purpose. The mold release that I used for the pictured part (a commercial product) was only marginally successful.

I'd like to hear any opinions on other options for easily releasing a part from a wood male mold. This part may be about 8-10 wide by 14-18" high.

As I'm typing this, would saran wrap work?

I have used saran with good results but... the downside is .... it picks up every wrinkle and then you are forced to sand the finished product to get any of the molded wrinkles out.

I even used 2" wide clear plastic packing tape when I worked with marine tex ..... same issue required some finish work but not much.

Bees wax works well as it fills the grain or scraches in the mold

Put on a heavy coat of Green Wax and don't remove all of it, easy to do and it works very well. Ask around you should be able to find it fairly easily.

Boomer - A bit of trivia from my past which will be of absolutely no help to you - -

40 years ago I did a short stint at Bertram Yacht working in their Purchasing Dept. At that time they had a 20' line, a 25' line and the line for the 31'er. I watched them make the plug for a new 36'er. It was built out of wood hull side up in a huge jig. When finished they coated it with some kind of wax. Then they built the female mold in glass over the plug with a jig being part of the assembly. When done they flipped it over via a large overhead crane so the hull was now down. They then took common water hoses and poured water in the small gaps between the plug and the mold. The weight of the water caused the gaps to expand. at some point the water won out and the two seperated. When it gave way it did so violently and sounded like a 155 howitzer being fired.

It's a type of release wax, but a little softer than most, on rough and/or porous surfaces like wood you can load it on and then just kind of smooth it out. Places that sell fiberglass supplies should have it, not the local hardware store though.
