Many seem to forget the maintenance / service thing. Try to find a mechanic that will work on a 2-stroke.

In my area there are tons of boat dealers. Only 1 will take in an oil burner, and that's all he does. Wait in line.

Even worse, some places won't even work on a carbed I/O over XX years old.

Yeah, yeah, right, right.....do it yourself. Some of us prefer to be IN the boat, not WORKING on it. I used to like to tinker. Not any more. Retirement gave me more time to hunt, fish, see the family, travel, etc. No time left for fixing an outboard so I can go out Saturday morning.

Yeah, the 4-strokes will break too. Maybe the longevity is yet to be determined.

I suspect that having a 4 Stroke with the Crankshaft Vertical creates some problems regarding having the Oil being flung around in the crankcase, especially in the lower part of the Case.

The only people who make money on a Repower, 4 stroke or 2, are the ones selling the new Motor. Repowering can be considered Maintenance

Looks like we are at a standstill. Let’s just say that it’s all about a persons individual preference. Like 2 strokes? Get one. Like 4 strokes? Get one. I’m 60-70% 2 stroke, 30-40% 4 stroke myself, in other words, I’m on the fence a bit. Time will tell me when I have to make a decision.

I'm actually in the middle of a decision making process WRT my Chieftain project. I have a pair of 1983 70HP Mercury 2-strokes that I'd originally planned on installing on the Chief. But now, I'm not so sure. And changing plans would have a major impact on the project. Financially and otherwise. What to do, ya know?

Heck, getting a definition of what "modern" actually means is part of the issue. My old 1983 engines may not have OEM parts available, but from what I can tell, there are plenty of aftermarket items.

I'd thought of installing a pair of 2000 era 4-strokes but learned just yesterday from a Mercury repair shop that such a thing could be very questionable. Here's a "modern" 2005 Mercury 115HP 4-stroke which is 21 years newer than my twins. Compression is good, internals are good, everything is good. Except the electronics are bad and are No Longer Available. So the shop is scrapping that motor!


The repair guy said that I should buy new engines. Nope, not in the budget! So, he advised not getting anything older than maybe 5 years because many manufacturers are really starting to cut back on supporting "older" engines.

A quandary for sure.

It won't be... Despite 'massive' uptake of electric vehicles, worldwide they still account for less than 3% of vehicles on the road. To make that even 50% will take decades!

As battery technology advances, and prices continue to drop I'm looking forward to running electric . But for now, gasoline is top dog ... king as far as energy density is concerned. Batteries aren't that expensive anymore. They're just heavy.

Not true. Old oils are reused. Either re-refined or filtered and cleaned and a new additive package put in and it's off to do the job again....

A lot of places, take old Oil and Tranny Fluids, and Burn them in Furnaces to heat their Shops. Not really an Environmentally Friendly thing but they save money by not buying Natural Gas/Heating Oil, and also save money by not dealing with Recycling Companies. Profit before People/Environment.

I don't think it will take decades, maybe one decade. My son in law works at a BMW dealership and they let him have a free vehicle as a perk. Last weekend he had a BMW SUV EV and that thing was amazing! The acceleration was insane, like taking off on a roller coaster. Can park itself, do pretty much anything. Cost 116,000 CAN however so thats probably the last time I'll ever sit in one.....he said their biggest worry is what will the resale value of EV's be after 7-8 years when the battery is getting to the end of its life.
