Hi All,

I have an Evinrude outboard motor that is missing the model number plate. Unfortunately, I also do not know the exact horsepower - it is either a 9.5 or 9.9. The year may be 1973 but even that is uncertain. The only numbers that I can find stamped near the motor's transom mount are 3042 followed by 14268. Is this the serial number? Also, there are several six-digit numbers stamped on various motor parts that begin with the digits 309xxx.

Do you know what year/model number motor I have? Is there a way I can figure it out?

Your help in this matter is greatly appreciated!

Best regards,

Matt

Welcome Matt!

Look on the engine block for a large welch plug....'bout the size of a quarter. The model and serial number will be on there. Post it here. We can help.

The first 9.9 did'nt appear till 1974.

Thanks for the fast reply OBJ! I'm not sure what a welch plug is but there is a quarter-sized depression in the engine block on top of the cylinder - unfortunately, there are no numbers there. The other part near the cylinder that looks like a quarter-sized depression (plug?) has the number 309518 with the number 4 under it. Am I getting close? Do I need to take off the flywheel to find the welch plug? Again, your help is much appreciated!

The welch plug looks like a core plug.....silver in color. Unless someone has removed it, it should be visible right on the block....no need to remove the flywheel.

The numbers you posted are not the model numbers.

Can you tell us where the carb on the engine is located....on the front of the block or on the starboard side near the back of the block?

Hi OBJ,

I don't see a silver plug on the block. Yes, the carb is on the starboard side near the back of the block. I appreciate your help...

If the welch plug and transom clasp tag are missing, then you could find you engine here Site with old Evinrude/Johnson brouchers They have lists of model numbers and a pretty extensive collection of pictures. If the cowl on our motor is original, then you could determine the year by what it looks like. Its not the best way, but it works if the cowl hasnt been replaced.

Thanks Pony. Based on the photos in the 1970 Italian catalog, the motor cover looks very similar to mine. Perhaps I do have a 1970 9.5 hp. I'll continue to dig further. I appreciate your help guys!

OBJ- What does the location of the carb tell me? Thanks!

The carb location tells you it's a 9.5.
