Re: Model number angst apology

Chris, if this is an electric shift, you will want to use "Premium C" gear oil. It's made for electric shifts. Or, you can use any gear oil that says "For Electric Shift" on the container. Don't use anything else.

Make sure the battery connections are clean from battery to starter.....including grounds. Dirty connections can cause the "click" only problem.

It may be also that the brushes in the starter may need a change out but first check out all other possibilities. Did you cross the big posts' on the solenoid with a screwdriver? If the starter cranks when this is done, it's likely the solenoid is bad.

starter is probably low battery. take to auto parts store they will load test for free. my 1 y/o one just went bad. i'd get the click, and the starter would run, but wouldn't take a full charge. trojan gave me a brand new one. walmart also has good deals on starting batteries. i use a group 27 1100 cca, but thats overkill.

That motor is not electric shift. The Wal-Mart oil previously mentioned will do just fine.

You need to use some caution when monkeying around with the electrical system. It is very easy to blow the amplifier and or rectifier. That'll cost ya. Start with the battery and make sure it is good. Move on to the battery cables and make sure they are clean and tight at both ends. Don't just look at them, remove them and clean them shiny bright. Do these things before any attempt at starting.

In spite of sounding really stupid. Can someone tell me where to put oil in? I've only had 2stroke engines in the past. :)

Re: Model number angst apology

this is a 4 cylinder 2 stroke engine, mix gas and twc 3 (outboard oil) 50 to 1. to change the lower unit oil there are 2 identical screwplugs, on the right side from the back, of the lower unit. you will need new seals everytime you remove the plugs, as this is the #1 leak point for water into the lower unit. with a pan to catch the oil, remove the bottom plug, then remove the top plug, the oil will drain, watch for water in the oil... to refill, you can use a L/U pump, or the squeeze tubes of lower unit oil. you fill from the bottom hole, air escapes the upper, using the tube you have to hold it tight into the hole to kepp from making a mess, and loosing oil. when oil comes out the top hole it is full. keeping the tube in the bottom , replace the top plug w/ new seal, then replace the bottom w/ new seal.

there is no oil in the engine block.. it is lubricated by the oil mixed in gas. standard 2 stroke. the newer engine have the vro, which automatically mixes the gas and oil, and has an oil tank.

Re: Model number angst apology

Well ya learn something every day LoL. I didn't know that they made 2 strokes this big! I have got the engine to turn over and the starter to work using a bigger battery and connecting that battery directly to the starter. On the control panel of the boat there is a light next to the ignition switch. The light cover says on so I am summizing that this is the ignition light. It is lit when the key is turned on and was lit whilst I turned over the engine. Whilst I turned the engine over I touched the HT leads (I'm not sure whether I am brave, desparate or, stupid LoL) and didn't get a shock. I would have thought that I would get a shock if I had spark. What do you think?

Heather just came home and I had her watch for a spark. Nothing. Any suggestions?

Re: Model number angst apology

you can use a remote starter switch ( pictured) it will let you work at the engine much easier. you can either turn on the key, and use the remote switch. or you can unplug the big red plug, and use the remote switch. this eliminates any problem in wireing in the forward control box. But, if the engine does start the only way to turn it off is to choke the engine to flood it. this way you can check spark, compression and anything esle much easier. also check your other post, i found paint,

Either the insulation is very good or there is no spark. Weak insulation and hot spark will knock you out of your socks. But none this is a valid spark test.

Re: Model number angst apology

Going to have another look and see if I can get a spark. Can anyone tell me whether the 1968 year is points or powerpack? As for the remote switch I have taken the ignition switch from the forward "steering" bulkhead and the ignition switch is now next to the engine. The boat needs a new floor and refitting from the ground up so it would have had to have come out eventually anyway LoL. Makes life a little easier though. :)

Re: Model number angst apology

didn't realize we were on page 2. the reason for the double post.
Key switch next to engine. Necessity the mother of invention.. i don't have a manual on it. 69 was powerpack. FR will know.

my power pack can be seen in the picture upper right, 2 bolts holding it.. all the wires to the coils connect there.

'68 is Capacitor Discharge (CD) ignition, with points. The points just tell the CD when to fire. You need a manual to work on this stuff.

Re: Model number angst apology

Right now I can't afford a manual but I have a little experience working on engines. Where are the points on one of these?

Re: Model number angst apology

Starter motor now engages but seems to alternate between fast and slow turning over of the engine. Definately no spark there. I don't know where to find the points :-(. I cured a fuel leak from the connector on the fuel filter cover. I'm hoping that with all the faults that I have cured so far that one of them was the major reason why the motor was so cheap.
