I have a merc 470 (79) which has had new gaskets, reworked ignition system and a rebuilt carb. I have had it running at the house great, but when I take it to the lake, initially starts up fine and runs great in gear, when the throttle is pulled to idle out of gear, it stalls, and then have a really difficult time getting it going again, lately it backfires like it is geting too much gas. The carb is a Rochester 2 CG, and set to Mercury specs. Timing is steady at 8 deg BTC and idle rpm (at the house) is about 750-800 with a good dwell at about 30. Really need help cuase next time it may stay at the lake !!!!
