the closer i get to painting my boat, the more i want to pin down ahead of time exactly what i need and how it will go onto the boat...

I have an aluminum boat and have stripped below the strake and have sanded above the strake all the way to the gunnels. some spots went through to bare aluminum... that paint adheres very well to the boat. I am going to spray paint the boat..ill use an etching primer and then a snadable primer and i want to use enamle with a hardener. my issue is i cant find any flat or matt colors i like in the paints brands I am considering...Majic T&C at tractor supply or Rustoleum.

i am sure there is a matta additive. I d like to know what its called and make sure it works with the paints i have in mind.

thanks

Re: mixing paint to get a matt

The old guy that taught me to paint a lot of years ago when we shot a lot of enamel taught me this trick. Thin gloss enamel paint with xylene and add the same amount of Talcum powder dissolved in it, instead of the normal reducer. i.e. If you use 1/2 cup of xylene you use 1/2 cup of Talc. I have used the technique on multiple occasions and it works great. There are now matte additives that you can buy at any auto paint store for acrylic enamel paint. From what I understand they are a form of "Liquid Talc" sooooo, I guess the old codger knew what he was doing. Any particular reason you want a Matte finish over the Gloss?

Or you could just use flatz with a nice selection of colors...not too pricey either

Yep after the fact you can scotch brite it to dull it but harder to get a well blended effect.

Now I understand the reason for the Matte Finnish. I would use Both techniques. The Xylene and Talc and then the Scotch Brite pad. think you'll get what you're looking for. Or you could go with these guys products...
