Minnesota Registration

Wondering of some one would have some advice for me.

I purchase a 1986 Lund Renegade about 4 years ago. When I purchased it the previous owner gave me the title for it. When I went to the Minnesota DMV and registered it 4 years ago I gave them the title and they did there stuff. I recently went into to get a duplicate title for it and they said that since the boat is 16ft it doesn't need a title. The registration card say's no on the titled part. Has any one herd of this?

The second problem i'm having is I have a life time license on the trailer and when the look up the license on it, it's saying it's registered under some one else. Since I purchase the boat 4 years ago I don't remember who I bought it from. The DMV won't tell me who it's registered to so I have no clue on what to do about the trailer or how to get a title for it?

Couple things
1) You don't register boats with the DPS (no such thing as DMV in MN), boats are registered with the DNR. Might be the same office location but different branches of government

2) Yes - titles only required for boats over 16ft in MN, although I think you can actually title smaller boats if you want to or if you have a lien on it.

3) You are pretty well screwed on the trailer problem without either tracking them down, producing a bill of sale or doing something illegal like registering it as a home built.

I wouldn't worry about the title for the trailer. Unless the person who it's titled to comes looking for their trailer who cares. You don't need it for anything. When it comes time to sell the person buying doesn't need to worry about plates or registration for the trailer so I doubt they will care if you don't have it.

Unless of course someone gets pulled over with the trailer and can't tell the police who the registered owner is..

You might take the plate to your local police dept and ask them to run it.... Worst case they take the plate but it isn't valid for you anyhow....

Go back to your title/reg office and inquire about how to obtain a title for the trailer... Most states have a process.

​It doesn't have a plate, it's got a small lifetime sticker probably affixed to the frame tongue.

This be a dumb question, But if I call my local police station would they run the license plate and tell me who it's registered to? If I could get the person name I'm sure I could hunt them down.

Seems to me that you should ask that question at your local police station.

Why waste the Police departments time? Go to your local DVS and apply for a new registration card. Done!

If the DMV is the agency that issues titles and plates then that is who you should be talking with. Most likely the police will not do what you are looking for because of privacy laws. They will most likely tell you if it has been reported stolen or not but that's about it.

MN doesn't title boat trailers under 3500 lbs. I'm just guessing that w/16' boat your trailer isn't rated to carry anywhere near that weight. That's why you never got a title with it when you bought it.

When I had a lake place in WI, that state didn't require a license period for my or any pontoon trailer. Boy was that nice.

I just registered my boat here in Aug. with the DMV! That's where you now register boats in Mn. ... 16 ft and under there is no title. The DMV does the registering....the info goes to the DNR. Take your trailer registration card in and have it transferred into your name . Then you will be issued a lifetime trailer license sticker that goes on the trailer tongue. Your registration card is your title per se.

Then you will be issued a lifetime trailer license sticker that goes on the trailer tongue. Your registration card is your title per se.

So you do to have pay for a new lifetime trailer license sticker when you re-register the trailer. Makes sense I guess. I'll have to look at the one on my snowmobile trailer. They must have some type of an ID/Serial number.

Look at the post above you. When you re-register a trailer in MN as the new owner you get charged for a new lifetime license. Provided it meets the max weight criteria.
