I just recently bought a 16 ft surfside with a minkota foot controlled trolling motor and it will turn left and right but the propeller wont spin. Anyone have any ideas about what might be causing this?

Re: minkota trolling motor problem

Foot controlled Minnkota of unknown age isn't much help. Just about all of them are foot controlled. Some are cable steered, some are electric steer. If this is a POWER DRIVE where and electrical cable connects the foot pedal to the motor, then it may be a faulty pedal, bad cable, dirty connector, broken connection in the motor head or a bad motor itself. My suggestion would be to use a buddies pedal to eliminate yours as the issue.

Re: minkota trolling motor problem

Good morning, I just had the same problem with my MINN KOTA PD65. It was the control board. MINN KOTA emailed me a test procedure to eliminate my foot pedal. Because they had an issue with the foot pedal with this model. All I would get is clicking from the relay on the control board. My tolling motor would turn left and right but the prop would not spin. Also, I don't know what model you have, but after taking mine apart I found a couple of things to look out for. On my PD65, I took off the top cap off and I have just two wires Red and Black. I found that the covering that protected the wires had burnt off of both wires and they were touching cause a short. I also found that there was a screw that went through the middle of those same two wires. This screw is used to hold down the bottom. What I found was, as the motor vibrates the wires move and rubs against the screw causing protective covering on the wire to be removed causing a short to the motor. Also, check your foot pedal, make sure that the foot pedal is clean on the inside.

I have same problem with my 48 # thrust Quiet Turbo Pro. I took the foot controller apart and found no vusible problems like you described. Is it possible for you to post the test procedure Minkota sent you. How/where is the easiest place to get a FREE repair manual, electrical diagrams? Or, can someone tell me how to test the motor for shorts or open circuits?
