when was the last time you changed the oil? eventually, water will get into your lower unit. I change my oil every fall cause the water in there will freeze and wreck my lower unit.

If you recently changed it and it looks like that, well then, perhaps someone else may have a say about the seals.

I think the only true way is to drain the oil.
Drop the lower unit, submerge the lower unit in water and apply air to the oil drain hole.

Where the air bubbles come out is your seal that has failed.

I am assuming this is for your Evinrude. Let's move this over there for a more focused response. Good luck!

Yes, you have a seal(s) that have failed. The best way to find it is mentioned above. I read a thread on here at some point that detailed how to make a contraption to pressureize the lower unit before you submerge it.

If you continue to run it like that the gears in the lower unit will eventually turn a pretty shade of blue. And then fail. Spend a little money now or a lot later. You decide.

best case scenerio is the oil filler screws(2) need to have 2 new washers (plastic) installed.by rights you should only use these once and replace with new ones every gearoil change.
