'97 Evinrude 90HP

I noticed milky oil coming from a small hole in the lower unit after a recent outing. I did run into shallow water that trip where the water inlet was plugged for only a few seconds. The motor didn't run hot and resumed pumping.

When I noticed the milky oil coming out, I drained the lower unit oil. The lower unit oil was milky too.

My question is why did the milky oil come from that hole? And did my runnig into the shallow water have something to do with it?

Re: MIlky oil from lower unit pee hole

Welcome DJ!

Knowing the hp and year of the engine will help out figuring out the problem.

If the gear lube looks milky, a pressure and vacuum test can help determine which seal is leaking. Also, sometimes fishing line will get in behind the prop and pretty much cut up the prop shaft seals.

I'm going to assume here...the hole your referring to is maybe forward on the lower unit just above the gearcase?...if so, what you may be seeing there is unburned oil from the engine mixing with the exhaust water. The hole is a cavity drain so water will not lay and freeze in the winter.....this is just an assumption about the hole...knowing where the hole is will help.

Thanks for posting.
