For long term reliability add a solenoid switched by the oil pressure switch. Have heard too many folks I respect recommend this (AllDodge for one) to skip it. Mercruiser doesn't do it that way, going direct from ignition switch, to oil pressure switch to pump. The failure point is drawing constant pump power off the oil pressure switch.

THANKS!!!!!
The previous owner was a duct tape guy. I jury rigged wires boat to get it in the water and we planned to fix in the fall. Guessing this guy must have replaced the switch assembly with sender. Thanks everyone!

Whole rebuild was because of water/oil issue. We are still arguing as to what caused it. I say intake issue leaked water into oil. But neighbor says it was the missing exhaust flappers? I checked mine, they were ripped off on port side. Fear made me replace them both. Other boaters say not needed. Just wondering.

Flappers may not help but they will next to never hurt. It only takes a little water to damage the motor. It can even happen when the motor is off and at anchor. If folks are sitting on the back of the boat having a good time and a wake comes in from the stern. With the boat sitting lower then normal that can setup the situation up for water intake
