Pull the intake manifold. It is quite possible the underside of it is cracked. Michigan Motorz sells a new one for that motor at a very reasonable price.

Thanks for everyone's help. Looks like a false alarm. I changed the oil and then ran a quart of diesel with another oil change and seems I'm good. I'm not sure what the original problem was but everything checks out now. I do have a question about the intake manifold. Is it 11 foot pounds or 35? The book I have says 35 on one page and 11 on another but I broke a bolt at 35. 11 seems low but when I removed it the first time they didn't seem very tight.

Glad you don't have a cracked block etc!

It is 11 ft-lbs.

I was going to post a copy of the page right out of the manual, but I think thre might be a copyright issue.........

It would be worth getting yourself a Mercury manual. They're not all that expensive.

Cheers,

Rick

Ok thanks. Just double checking. I have them at 11 f/p. Seems to be running great but I still need to check the timing. I had changed the intake manifold and didnt have the mark for the distributor. I think I have it pretty close. Any one know whats the timing procedure for a 4.3l merc i think its a thunderbolt iv. maybe V. Do I have to ground a wire out to put it in base timing mode if its a IV? I can only find procedure for a V. Im guessing if I cant find the purple/white wire I have a IV and no Base timing mode is required.

TB-IV doesn't have a base timing mode, just point and adjust
