Was looking at a mid 90's Johnson 40 hp the other day, the one with the tilt assist. I have read on here that the assist mechanism is pretty much junk. If the tilt assist goes out on this unit, is the motor still useable? Just not able to go in reverse is the way that i understand it. Is there any way to get rid of the tilt assist and put the motor on a CMC and be done with it? The motor is good but I hear of these tilt assists going bad alot and they are like 550 a piece.

Have you checked the cable and valve to make sure something is not stuck in the open position? If you did go the CMC route you may want to call them to see if they have some type of bracket to keep the mtr from kicking up in reverse.

there is a lock on the tilt assist, thats let you lock the motor in any trim or tilt position....if you lock the unit with the lever on the side, you should be ok...

I had one on a 2001 50 hp i had...the unit got stuck once...I couldnt move it at all...it was stuck in the down position, but reverse wasnt a problem at all!!

trailering was the biggest headache...

they are a sipmle unit....the headache is getting the stuck unit off the motor to work on it.

plus sometimes just the cable goes

good luck

Re: Mid 90's Johnson tilt assist

Thanks for the replies guys. I dont own the motor yet but I am thinking of buying it. The boat shop that has it is going through it all and putting on a new tilt assist this week. I was just curious as to what my options may be down the line to keep me from having to buy a new tilt assist very often. I guess I could put it on a cmc to begin with and keep the tilt assist lock locked, just use the cmc to tilt the motor and not worry about it.

If you get the mtr, get an owners manual and learn how to use the tilt assist. It really is very slick when one knows how to use it.

the tilt assit is really neat, BUT it isnt nothing like POWER tilt N trim!!!!!!!!!!

if you like that, consider the cmc unit....but make sure you get the larger 130!!

of course that is going to be a pretty penny

might be cheaper to look for a motor that already has TNT from the factory!!

good luck
