trying to remove the lower unit, disconnected all the bolts but couldn't figure out how disconnect the shift linkage ?

How do I remove the lower unit without taking the whole thing apart.

All I have to repair is the helocoil (drain plug)

Can't take the whole motor in, its too far in the bush.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Most of the 1980's 50HP units have a single bolt under the carbs to release the shift lever.

web page

Thank you ... does that mean I will be able to slide the whole shift rod through the housing, without any bushing or connectors to remove ? inside the steering housing.

If I remember right, the bolt you are talking is 90 degrees to the actual shift rod, behind the carbourator, in front of drive shaft casting.

Any tricks that I need to know in removing and reconnecting? shift lever position, etc.

Yep,that is what it means.Just make sure that you remember whether it was in forward or reverse when you removed it and put it back in the same position.
You may wish to build yourself a "special" tool to remove the cotter pin because that can be a pain in the neck.
You might want to consider to take the helicoil to the outboard and leave the whole thing on.It really is a simple thing to do.

Thank you very much, the helicoil tool is probably more expensive then the motor is worth !! but something to think about.
