Mid 50's Johnson carb question

I'm working on a Mid 1950's Johnson, 18hp. I'm cleaning the carb and there is a sealed chamber at the end of the low speed needle assembly. Do I take that off and clean inside it? The kit I got looks like it came with a same size seal. It doesn't look like it will come out easy. How does it come out if I'm suppose to clean inside?<br /><br />Thanks

radar - yes, you really want to remove and clean under that seal. That covers the tiny idle orifaces which are likely to clog. You drill a 1/8" hole through the center of the soft plug and carfully pry it out with a nail or screwdriver. You want to be careful that when you drill through, you don't let the drill bit run through the cavity and hit the other side. Restrict your movement to only 1/8".<br /><br />The new soft plug gets sealed with a light coat of 1000 sealer, and then you put it in the hole convex side up. Then using a hammer and punch tap the top of the plug until it expands and holds itself tightly against the boss in the carb.

No one's ever used my name and Einstein's name in the same sentence so I have two questions. You say the convex side up. That is the curve or arched side up, correct?<br /><br />Where can I get the 1000 sealer?<br /><br />Thanks for the help

Right radar, curved side up. What ya' want to do is us a punch to flatten it into the boss as Paul posted. Get as big a punch as you can find. This makes the job easier. It will flatten pretty easy so be careful there.<br /><br />You can use a gasket sealing compund also....shy away from form-a-gasket....to coat the edges a LITTLE. I also cover the top of the plug just for good measure.
