Method to Set 1988 Merc v6 4.3 Timing

What is the proper method to set the timing on 1988 Merc V6 262 4.3L engine? Just reset the distributor and I know the timing degree I just need to know the correct method? Doesn't it have to be in base mode? If so how do you do this?

88 was the Thunderbolt IV system, no base timing like the TBV system. Just aim your light and turn the distributor.

Thanks alot. The distributor dropped dead on the first try. Didn't even have to tweak the distributor to start the engine. Upon initial timing check it was at 4 BTDC and its suppose to be at 8. Took it to the lake and all is well. Thanks again Don.
