Metal shavings in reed block

I just purchased a fix me up. Have a 1990 mercury 135 black max. Starting dueling issues. Have it tore down to reed valves as research led me there. Once I got to it, the reeds I suspected were bad. Question is. In all the build up of oil in the bottom were a bunch of metal shavings. Any idea what they are from?
Before taring it down did compression test cold and 5/6 were at 87, one was zero. Engine was cold when tested as won’t stay running.
Should I replace reeds rebuild and test or continue on as I am this far in?

tha "zero" along with "metal shavings" tells ya power head needs ta come completely apart ta find all tha damage............. then dollars will dictate what ya wanna do from there...........

Reed valves have nothing to do with the " zero " compression in the one cylinder.-------This motor needs teardown and full evaluation.

Reed valves are pretty robust. Inspect them and see if they are cracked or broken. If not, they are fine.

Metal shavings in the crankcase are not good. You have piston damage, and possibly bearing damage.

Thank you, it is then what I was hoping but wasn’t. Lol. Time to get to work.

Looks like a bearing let go inside.-----Likely the wristpin bearing.-----Motor might have had a rattle.----Some of us can hear this rattle.----Some folks can only hear if motor is running.----And if a motor runs , then everything is OK I think.

Thank you. Will be doing full tear down this week looks like some welded to inside of piston wall. Hoping it can still be bored.

Detonation that broke rings..common with bad idle/advance module. Yes it can be bored, .020 should clean it up easily

If the cylinder is cast iron, the melted aluminum can be removed from it using muriatic acid. Obviously the block must be bare.....

Hard to tell from picture if is a piece of a bearing ( it is straight ) , but could be a broken ring.-----Clearly an example of why big motors need to run with a tachometer.----Notice a drop of 300 / 500 RPM and stop running it.----Or do like the previous owner and run till it dies completely.----Need to check this cast iron liner for cracks.

yeah, thats a wrist pin bearing.. usual aftermath of probable detonation/heat...
