I have recently acquire a 17ft glass par with a merc outboard 1500 blueband. This my first time with boats so ill get to the problem. The problem is that whenever I took it out to the lake. The motor turns on with no problem. Now when I put it in throttle to go forward it just died. And also, before I got the boat previous owner told me that there is some kind of problem with the motor cylinder 1 and 3. That's all he said and I don't know where to start. So any advise or suggestion would really appreciate it. Thanks in regards

John

Johm, That behavior is not unusual for Mercs. Take a compression test to see what the PO was talking about. Post back your results

First check the compression on 1 & 3. If there's a blown gasket (or worse) there's your problem. If however they are ok (all over 100 lb) then you may be running too lean. After I rebuilt my carbs, that was kinda my problem. Wouldn't low idle in gear without a quick push of the throttle to keep it going, then a lousy top end. A few twists of the screws, and she was tearing up the water again!

Chad, That motor does not have a head gasket. If his compression is good, it is likely his carbs are mis-adjusted or dirty or both.

See, you learn something new every day! I'm relatively new to outboards and haven't needed to tear down that far yet. I just used other motor experience thinking "gasket".... I love this forum!

A lot of 2 stroke engines don't have head gaskets. Some have a copper gasket that you can re-use. You heat them up really hot and then drop them in a bucket of water. That causes them to swell back up. I haven't had a outboard apart yet either but worked on lots of other 2 strokes. Air and water cooled. I would look at replacing the ignition wires too unless they are recent. They unscrew from the cap so don't start out just yanking on them. I found the connections on mine very nasty looking but they cleaned up well. With fresh wires and plugs it fired right up.
