i have a 40hp 3 cyl. 1998 with only 3 seasons on a pontoon. had very little pee so i changed the pump and thermostat, now when i start the motor i have to rev-up for 30 seconds to get the pump going or the temp gauge goes up fast. it will stay at about 140 degrees if im moving but when stopped and start up again i have to rev-up again to get the pump going. its almost like it looses its prime, it never stops coming out the pee hole. the motor only has about 75 hours on it and only about 25 hours on this pump. i was told to maybe put another pump in, is this the answer? i have put pumps in other motors with good results, but this one has not worked right at all. NEED HELP THANKS jwn

Re: mercury overheat

I have a 60 3 cyl and changed the impellar and it still heated up so I changed the whole pump and that fixed it. Something must have been wrong with the houseing.

I would change the complete water pump, but 140 degrees is normal. The thermostates are designed to open at 140 degrees. Its better to run at this temp. Its not good to run at colder temps. I would still change the pump. They are cheap compared to power heads or rebuilds.
